Accepting the Transitions of Life

Is Menopause a Joke?

The moment notice came that this month’s issue of Home Cures That Work would focus on menopause I knew the angle I would take in my monthly column on the Spiritual Dimension of Wellness. However, I also knew I would be unable to restrain myself from my favorite little joke on the matter of menopause.

Where is menopause mentioned in the Bible? Answer: “…and Mary rode Joseph’s a** all the way to Egypt.” My wife said, “Don’t you dare drop that in your column.”

Hopefully, I have not alienated half my audience. If so, my apologies and I should have heeded my wife’s warning. All kidding aside, the Bible does speak to every area of life and we don’t have to twist texts like that to get them to apply.

Of course, PMS and menopause are not the same thing. Menopause is part of life. It is a transition every bit as much as birth, puberty and death are transitions.

Though we think of it as primarily a female transition, the male body has its own version sometimes called male menopause, man-opause or andropause. Changing hormonal levels are normal as the human body ages and men and women transition out of a childbearing phase or season of life.

Seasonal Changes

The season of menopause is not a disease and therefore there is no cure. Granted, there are hormone therapies that mask it, but menopause is part of our design. They only way to fully avoid it would be to die early. For sure that is no solution and we are left to seek out healthy and positive strategies to navigate this normal transition.

Dealing with change is something that differs slightly from person to person. Some people are seemingly un-phased by even major changes. Others find their world turned upside down by even the slighted change. Since humans are holistic beings, when change begins to manifest in one area (physically for example), other areas (emotionally and spiritually for example) adjust themselves to the new norm.

My wife and I are a couple years away from our last teenager leaving the house. Teenagers vividly illustrate what I am describing....

Envy Rots the Bones

Grandma Was Shrinking From Osteoporosis

Growing up, a holiday ritual in our home was to line all the children up against the doorframe of the dining room and mark how much taller they were since that same time the year before. My grandmother was always impressed by how tall we were getting and I can remember how proud I was the day my mark was higher on the doorframe than her mark.

The next year we noticed her mark was even lower than it was the year before and we all giggled because grandma was shrinking. We laughed, but it was not funny to her. The next year she refused to stand in the doorframe to be marked and instead she made the comment that the reason her mark was lower was because our old house was settling.

What actually was happening is she was suffering from osteoporosis. For her funeral service years later, we put together a picture loop of her life and it was stunning to see how tall she was in her earlier years. Gravity takes its toll on us as we get older and normal aging includes some bone and stature loss.

Good Bone Health is Matter of Life Or Death

It says in Ecclesiastes 12:1-7, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ‘I find no pleasure in them…’ …when the keepers of the house tremble and the strong men stoop…” This passage is an elaborate metaphor describing the aging process and in this verse, in particular, it describes how those who once stood strong and tall, now stoop.

To oversimplify, we leave this world as we come into the world – fragile. Our bones provide the framework for the body as wood gives structure to a house. Over the years, wood naturally breaks down and begins to sag and settle. However, there are things that can speed up this breakdown, things like termites, dry rot, and exposure to water and weather. In similar fashion, this thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density that we call osteoporosis is a disease that speeds up the break down of our bones. This issue of Home Cures That Work is full of natural health remedies that will help slow down and stop osteoporosis, as well as strengthen your bones. My concern is always that we only treat symptoms and never address root causes, many of which are spiritual in nature.

My mother died of multiple myeloma. Six years after a lung transplant and taking maximum doses of anti-rejection medicines, her kidneys ceased to function properly and her bones stopped producing blood. It was remarkable to me at that time realizing how important the bones are to life. The heart may seem most important but, in fact, the bones manufacture the blood, which is the life of the body. The Bible says, “The life of every creature is its blood.” (Leviticus 17:14) When we understand the spiritual reality of the life being in the blood and the fact that bones make blood, good bone health becomes a matter of life or death.

Disdain for Others Attacks YOUR Bones

Envy by Flickr Emily the Elephant

Proverbs 14:30 tells us, “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” Each month the aim of this column is to uncover some of the root causes of physical ailments. There is no doubt we are spiritual beings as well as physical beings and it is almost universally known that the physical and spiritual are very interrelated and interdependent. Things that eat away at us spiritually and emotionally eventually eat away at us physically. With that as a basis,...

Are Bed Bugs A Wake Up Call For A Nation Spiritually Asleep?

Every one of us needs to sort out how we believe God is involved in the world today. Many may not admit they are Deists: they believe in God, but they are unwilling to give him credit or blame for any direct involvement in the world today. This is a theology of a God who had hands-on connections back in the beginning, or in Bible days, but today is pretty silent, leaving us to ourselves.

What the Bible actually says is that all things are sustained by him (Colossians 1:17), at all times. Were God to lift his hand for a mere nanosecond, even molecules at the atomic level would instantly unravel.

God is not silent today; he is always communicating, always speaking, guiding, confirming, correcting and warning. The problem is many are not familiar with the sound of his voice and few are fluent in God’s language of choice: symbolism.

Symbolism is the language throughout the Bible: significant numbers, colors, creatures and circumstances. God has even used everyday things like coats or clay pots to communicate a message. Jesus taught his disciples to see the spiritual, symbolic meaning behind everyday events.

A number of years ago, I read Murray Dueck’s fascinating book called, “If It Were A Dream, What Would It Mean? Discovering the Spiritual Meaning Behind Everyday Events.” To be clear, greater meaning and significance is not to be milked out of every little news item. However, those with prophetic sense note that there are spiritual signs of something more in transpiring events. Those with eyes to see the signs and discern deeper spiritual significance are never able to prove it is indeed God speaking; they just have a sense to guide their prayers.

Because of Dueck’s book and his fascinating examples of God speaking to the world today, you can understand how my interest was piqued last fall with this headline: “Plague of Bed Bugs Found in Empire State Building.” The word “plague” triggered ...

Spiritual Clarity for those Navigating the Fog of Autism

In general, we all find disease frustrating and can easily empathize with those afflicted and affected. However, diseases that effect children stir up a whole different set of emotions ranging from anger to zeal – anger in terms of how could this be happening and zeal to conquer.

One out of every one hundred sixty-six (1 of 166) children in America is diagnosed with autism.  Despite numerous advancements in understanding and treating autism, it remains shrouded in mystery and misunderstood even by the medical community – for the most part. There is much written on this subject; but unlike a generation ago, parents today have resources and support at their fingertips, thanks in part to the internet. What follows is my attempt to contribute to the conversation — and controversy.

Over the years, as I’ve interacted with parents of autistic children, several questions are raised about autism and how it relates to God, healing and hope. These questions bear repeating here and my prayer is that my response to the questions will benefit you. Before I begin, let me mention that it is okay to question God. Jesus said ask, seek and knock. It’s even okay to bang on heaven’s door. God wants to be known by you. The more you press into knowing him, the more the difficulties in the world make sense.

The “Why Me?” Question – Why did God choose me...

Can God Heal Fibromyalgia Or Is It Indeed Incurable?

The answer to the question, Can God heal Fibromyalgia?” — is YES! The Bible says, “He forgives all our sins and heals ALL our diseases!” (Psalm 103:3). There isn’t one disease or diagnosis that is beyond his ability or desire to heal today. I hope that is a hopeful truth for somebody who is hurting right now.

I’m led to write today because people very close to me whom I love dearly, are getting pummeled by Fibromyalgia. We have seen God physically heal people here at Church at the Gate in numbers into the hundreds. However, so far, we have only seen what I’d call temporary relief as we pray for healing from Fibromyalgia. Also, I’m hearing Fibromyalgia being regularly called out through the Word of Knowledge in healing and revival meetings throughout America. I do believe the Great Physician is giving great and full victory to many people from this devastating infirmity. I have more many more questions than answers – so pardon my ignorance – is this only an American malady? I’ve seen/heard nothing of it in the healing meetings I’ve attended overseas. I want to hear from those of you who have been freed of Fibromyalgia wherever you are.

If you, or anyone you know, have been healed by God from Fibromyalgia, then please share your story here in the comment section of this post. The Bible says we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the WORD OF OUR TESTIMONY. If you have been healed of Fibromyalgia, please share your testimony for the benefit of others here. If you have experienced any victory from Fibromyalgia through Christian healing prayer, please share that here. If you know of someone who has been supernaturally healed of Fibromyalgia, encourage them to share their testimony here.

Our local newspaper did a brief story on “Mysterious Fibromyalgia” (and recently removed from post). The subheading is “Chronic pain brings on insomnia, depression, loss of brain activity and IS INCURABLE.” The last two words paint a hopeless picture. Here’s the opening paragraph of the article…

“Imagine hurting all over, every day, with a physical exhaustion that never completely subsides, not even with adequate sleep and rest. Add insomnia, brain fog, and depression. The worst part – there’s no cure. Sufferers of fibromyalgia don’t have to imagine that nightmare. They live it. Daily.”

The article gives these facts, that according to the National Fibromyalgia Association, 3-6% of the population suffers from it. Women are most affected by it. And, there are physicians that don’t believe the disease even exists.

I’ve spoken recently with some of our doctors and it’s a mixed bag. Some think it’s a “catch all” diagnosis for something that no one can really explain. One said she never saw these symptoms twenty years ago and now she sees them every day in her office. Others say “its real” and relief can be found in various treatments – acupuncture, chiropractic care, osteopathy, pain meds, etc. but that there is no cure or any real understanding of root causes. I’ve spoken to some of our counselors and mental health people about it. Some say they have found it relates to previous trauma or (sexual) abuse. Some of my friends in healing and deliverance ministry also say this is the case, and this is how a demonic spirit of infirmity first gains access – through some trauma or abuse. I was given a Gulf War Vet newsletter minutes ago that says the United States military now lists Fibromyalgia at the top of the list of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder manifestations.

I am no expert, nor am I a doctor. Those of you reading this who suffer from Fibromyalgia know light years more about this than I. If you are struggling with Fibromyalgia, I hope you’ll join the conversation here and dialog with others who comment here about their victory. I do welcome you to comment about your journey into supernatural healing and even mentioning how people have prayed for you in not-very-helpful-ways (as long as you stay positive about it). I think there is something to learn from unsuccessful well-intentioned attempts at divine healing.

I seek no controversial debate or attack here, nor do I want to lay a lack-of-faith guilt-trip on those who honestly and desperately desire a touch from God. I have a pastoral heart and desire to see God touch people’s lives. I’ve seen him do amazing things and I know he loves people. I’m throwing this post out there to solicit comments from people who’ve seen God heal Fibromyalgia. The most valuable thing about this post is not in what I have to say; it will be in what these folks share. In fact, I probably won’t offer much in the comments section because again, I’m not an expert and have little more to say. I would welcome comments from people in healing and deliverance ministries who have insights into how to pray for healing for people suffering from Fibromyalgia and more importantly, what are the spiritual dynamics behind this infirmity. The article I quoted above said there is some thought that this is genetic. But, even there, I don’t want this to be a medical discussion. I’m asking for testimonies of how God healed people of Fibromyalgia and graceful dialog about the spiritual realities here. I’m hoping hope comes forth.

Here are just a couple “rules” for this post and commenting. I don’t want to hear anything about turning to Buddhism for relief or anything like TM, Oprah, or anything other than Jesus and Biblical Christianity. If you suggest anything else is our hope, I’ll delete that comment immediately. Jesus is our only hope. If you are among those who’ve given up hope concluding Fibromyalgia is your “lot in life,” then I’d rather you not share that here either. If you think it’s God’s Will that you are sick, I’d rather that get discussed elsewhere also. Not here. Really, if we are unsure it’s God’s Will we have relief from Fibromyalgia we better sort that out before we even go to a doctor seeking relief. With that thinking, taking meds would go against what God wants for you. I don’t like to debate if healing is God’s will and don’t want to open that can of worms here. I just want to pray for healing for the sick and let God be God. I want to hear testimonies of the grace of God. I do know God uses suffering and that there are redemptive purposes for pain but I also know one of the reasons God allows sickness is to reveal himself as Healer.

My sole purpose and hope in bringing this up is to provide a place where one beggar can share with another beggar where they found bread. I’m not the baker. But I know the answer is in the one who multiplies the loaves.

Intended for Intimacy

As the father of seven young children, my friend is accustomed to the looks and comments of strangers out in public.  Some are even brazen enough to quip things like, “Do you know what’s causing this?”  My friend is quick with the retort, “Yes, and we enjoy it too much to stop.” That typically puts them in their place. My favorite line is when he tells people he has seven kids not because he loves kids so much but because he loves his wife so much. People always laugh.

There would be absolutely nothing to smile about if his seven kids were from seven different mothers, three of whom were his sisters. My apologies for the quick turn into creepsville and dysfunction. It was necessary to make the point that sex is a good and wonderful thing within the confines of certain boundaries, in particular the boundary of marriage. Marriage is the life-long commitment between one man and one woman. Outside that context of fidelity, sex isn’t safe.

Those who read this column each month know I regularly connect health and wellness with living as our Creator intended. The reason God put sex within the confines of marriage is not because he wants to spoil the fun, but because he wants to spare us the pain.

There is much confusion today with regard to sex and sexuality. There is even more hurt, brokenness, shame and addiction. This is not the place to review our nation’s Puritan and Victorian past as it relates to the suppression of human sexuality as an evil. Nor is it necessary to detail what we all see every day: an over-sexed society where lust an exploitation are a multi-billion dollar industry and where perversion is reaching frightening levels under what can only be described as...

All is Calm

Knowing that some who read this will still have their Christmas decorations up, it seems appropriate to take an inspirational approach and tie-in this month’s featured topic – restless leg syndrome – with the bigger story of this season of the year. What is manifesting in an increasing number of people’s legs – tingling, odd sensations, antsy, itching urges and discomfort – is a metaphor for a global anxiety and lack of peace. Churches and Cathedrals all over the globe just revisited the relevance of God sending one called “The Prince of Peace” to that Bethlehem manger on what became known as that Silent Night. Even to this day, to the degree we disregard Jesus, we forfeit the peace that could be ours. Jesus said,

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”  John 14:27

About this peace, the Apostle Paul wrote that those who pray to Jesus discover a “peace that surpasses understanding.” In other words, circumstances can be such that we ought to be anything but peaceful; but though we can’t explain it, all is well with our souls. The reality of what I’m writing about will change your life and the waves of this supernatural peace can touch every area of your life including your relationships, and every part of your body, including your restless legs.

Break a Leg

In the Bible, the leg is a symbol of both strength and pride. Psalm 147:10 says God “takes no pleasure in the legs of man.” The muscular strength of the legs of a runner portrays his pride. In a variety of places in the Old Testament, we find passages connecting legs with strength and pride.  “His legs are as pillars of marble, set upon sockets of fine gold.” (Song of Solomon 5:15)  Of course, there are also King Nebuchadnezzar’s “legs of iron.”

In the New Testament, the only reference to legs is in John 19:31-33 in connection with the soldiers wanting to break the legs of Jesus on the cross. It was customary in crucifixion to break the legs of the one on the cross as additional punishment and shame, and to speed up death. Jesus’ legs were not broken which, unknowingly to the soldiers, fulfilled a centuries-old prophecy that none of his bones would be broken.

In my work as a spiritual coach, I help people grow spiritually even as they struggle physically, mentally and emotionally.  The spiritual dimension of a person is hard-wired to these other more tangible dimensions of our being. When a person reports a physical problem, such as restless leg syndrome, my role has been to help them discern root causes, many of which are spiritual in nature. Knowing that the God who made us can make us well (and that He made the things that make us well, i.e. natural remedies) I encourage people...

Loving Lepers

Black and White Skin Disease

On a crowded flight recently I made my way to my seat only to discover I’d be sitting next to a dark complected African man with an obvious case of the skin disease Vitiligo: the patchy loss of skin pigmentation. So intense was the contrast of colors on his face, it took a conscious effort to not do a double take. It took literal intention on my part to look him in the eye, as the natural thing would have been to stare at his face.

Being honest, as my arm rested on the armrest against his, I had the fleeting thought that the black/white patterns on his arm were Holstein-like. Surely you would not have thought the same, but I did. (Perhaps the years I milked cows on a Wisconsin dairy farm brought that to mind first). During the flight, I figured out that the seat on the other side of the man was empty because the person assigned to that seat had asked to be moved. Compassion welled up in my heart. It is one thing to have a disease on the inside; it is another thing to have it on the outside.

Rather than read, I closed my eyes and reflected on what life must have been like for this fellow. Surely his family gave no thought to his appearance, as things we are used to seeing fade into the background naturally. Perhaps children found him frightening. Knowing that most cultures would marginalize him as unclean, I thought about the levels of rejection he likely faced.

Beauty Is More Than Skin Deep

Knowing how God loves and values each person, I thought through the plotline of the Beauty and the Beast believing that underneath the hideous facade there was surely a prince. The story of Job also came to mind as Satan stepped up his attack on Job to a whole other level by striking his flesh with painful sores. Being well-versed in the Biblical passages where Jesus touched lepers, I thought of how the teachers of the law required people to walk on the other side of the road when a leper passed by. In fact, lepers were required to call out “Unclean!” as a warning those near them. People would scatter a safe distance away.

A decade ago I preached in a couple of leper colonies in southeast Asia and I remember, at that time, thinking about whether or not it would be a waste of my life if God called me to give my life to serving them there. Those who know God and His compassion understand it would not be a wasted life to wash the sores of the afflicted.

We know more about skin diseases today. Consider shingles, for example. It is a virus-based infection of the central nervous system and contagious, but only to those who come into contact with open sores.  Nonetheless, skin diseases pack a greater measure of shame because they are visibly evident.

Rejection vs. Love Test

The irony of many skin diseases is that the root issue (like anxiety, fear, self-rejection and self-hatred) increases as the blight develops and becomes more evident. It is known that those struggling with anxiety and those who are under emotional stress are more susceptible to the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), which causes shingles. The medical community is still trying to connect the dots as to how and why viruses seem to attach themselves to emotional and spiritual problems. Most ointments prescribed for skin diseases are topical anti-histamines. The body responds to fear, anxiety and stress via the over-secretion of histamines. Again, the irony is that for many skin diseases these root issues causing them to manifest are compounded by the outbreak and additional rejection results.

.

Proteolytic enzymes are enzymes that help you digest the proteins in food. Although your body produces these enzymes in the pancreas, certain foods also contain proteolytic enzymes. Papaya (the unripe fruit) and pineapple are two of the richest plant sources.

God’s remedy is acceptance and love. These are the very things Jesus imparted as he literally touched afflicted people. Of course, there are natural remedies for shingles and other skin diseases (including things like fruits with proteolytic enzymes and amino acid supplements).  But, this column touches on the supernatural remedies, which are every bit as important as the things we apply in the natural.

There is also some association in the Bible between curses and skin diseases. On numerous occasions, God even afflicted people with blights, leprosy and sores as a measured judgment. It is also a strategy of demons to come against the faithful in hopes they’ll turn and curse God. Each of us can sort out what we believe about the degree to which God allows the curse of skin afflictions.

As we love hurting people and pray for them, there are times we sense we might need to break curses that are coming against them. More often than not, we have found these curses are self-imposed. As we plead the blood of Jesus over a person’s life and pray with authority and compassion, these curses can be broken.

Alzheimer’s, Forgetting the Elderly

In the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, there is an ancient allegory about aging:

“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ‘I find no pleasure in them’ – before the sun and the light and the moon the stars grow dark, and the clouds return after the rain; when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men stoop, when the grinders cease because they are few, and those looking though the windows grow dim; when the doors to the street are closed and the sound of grinding fades when men rise at the sound of birds, but all their songs go faint… then man goes to his eternal home and mourners go about in the streets.  Remember him – before the silver cord is severed… and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”  Ecclesiastes 12:1-7

It takes a couple of times reading through this for the allegory of aging to really come alive. Notice the picturesque descriptions of:

  • Hearing loss
  • Loss of vision
  • Fewer teeth
  • Physical weakness
  • Not being as mobile as in earlier years

The allegory describes an aging body and the painful process when the mind and senses fade.

Time is a key theme in Ecclesiastes and the one thing medicine cannot cure. Science cannot tame or stop the biological clock. For centuries, people have sought the fountain of youth, but it most certainly does not exist.

.

A “sound mind” is clear of fear. There is no benefit in fearing whatever we dread. Face it. Surrender. Trust God for help to overcome.  Peace of mind is worth it.

Yet, God is the beginning and the end and is present at both times and each moment in between. Typically, the mind is the last to go, but Alzheimer’s is increasingly rearing its ugly head.  2 Timothy 1:7 tells us that “a sound mind” is a gift from God. Yet, there is more at work here —far more. Every dimension of human life is inter-related: physical and emotional, emotional and mental, mental and spiritual. With regard to mental and spiritual dimensions, it is impossible to precisely discern where the one stops and the other starts.

Since ancient days, those who bear the image of God (human beings) have been the targets of the enemies of God. The first thing we learn about the devil in the Bible is not that he’s powerful; it’s that he’s crafty: “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made…” He threw up a cloud of confusion at Adam and Eve spiritually: “Did God really say…?”  (Genesis 3:1) He’s been doing it ever since.  It’s not true that all mental problems are demonic in nature. However, some mental problems are demonic in nature, springing up from spiritual and emotional root causes.

In the case of Alzheimer’s, Dr. Henry Wright in his book “A More Excellent Way,” writes about Alzheimer’s as a result of white corpuscles congregating at critical nerve junctions of the brain:

“Whenever I find white corpuscles attacking the body and not doing what God created them to do, I have, without exception, found various degrees of self-hatred and guilt.”

Because root causes are emotional and spiritual in nature, cures for this and other ailments...

Gluten-Free: Discerning between Craze and Cure

Jumping on a bandwagon is not something I typically do. Considering I’m a Christian minister and the book has sold a hundred bazillion copies, some find it hard to believe when I tell them I still do not own, nor have I read a copy of The Purpose Driven-Life by Rick Warren. My snarky side emerges at times when people inquire as to why I resist joining the crowd. One of my favorite retorts is that Jesus told us to follow him not the latest hip getting hyped.

For better than a year, the subject of health care reform has made headlines and we all watched our elected officials vote for something we found out later no one had actually read. One brazen legislator said Congress needs to make haste to pass the bill so we can all find out what’s in it. People jumped on the craze — not the cure.

Most would agree we need health care reform, but true to form I found myself bucking the crowd saying, “No. What we need more is for the government to promote health, not provide healthcare.” The shift I am talking about is from intervention to prevention. Forty years ago, the government made polluting unpopular through national Keep America Beautiful campaigns that promoted a clean environment (Remember the teary Indian in the canoe?).  It worked, and there was a cultural shift toward a clean environment. My sense is the same needs to happen with regard to Keeping Americans Healthy. If that ever becomes a fad, I’ll jump on board. The craze is toward treatments, whereas the cure is in preventions.

That’s why I am committed to natural health. It’s preventative and deals with root causes, many of which are spiritual in nature. Natural health can hardly be considered trendy or a fleeting fad, as these things have been known and working since ancient times.

Gluten-Free: Fact or Fad?

All that being said, natural health is not immune to fads. Perhaps it was only a matter of time; lots of money is to be made in the health care industry. Companies hire “experts” to tell them what the trends are for grocery shoppers and, for example, things like the gluten-free market become all the buzz. In 2003, 135 gluten-free products were on the market. Five years later in 2008, there are 832. As you can see, gluten-free became quite the craze.

.

Even without a Celiac disease diagnosis, a gluten-free diet has proven to help alleviate the symptoms of migraines and dermatitis.

What is interesting is...
