Prostate or Prostrate?

Prostrate Flickr by silverlily

As you have undoubtedly surmised, this month’s topic is prostate health. Initially, when I received the news, I almost tapped out. I mean, seriously, a spiritual take on prostate health? Not wanting to give up, I kept staring at the word prostate and suddenly — I had it!

Several years ago, I was in a church service and the pastor’s sermon opened with these words, “Last night as I sought the Lord, prostate on the ground.” Yes…a humorous mispronunciation gave me the needed inspiration to tackle this month’s subject.

The English language is rife with faux pas, but perhaps none more confusing than homophones.A homophone is a word that sounds like another word, but is spelled different, i.e. very/vary, wait/weight, etc. So, prostate/prostrate offers a unique challenge in it’s own, right!?

The word “prostate” is a noun referring to a gland surrounding the neck of the bladder in the male species responsible for releasing prostatic fluid, while the word “prostrate” is an adjective referring to the action of laying flat on the ground, face down, in reverence or submission. The correlation is revelatory, if we have eyes to see the implication!

The Real PROSTATE Story

Prostate Cancer by Flickr North Shore-LIJ

Over 30,000 men die of prostate cancer in the U.S. every year. There is mounting controversy over PSA testing, biopsies, surgery on elderly males, etc. Many doctors are now claiming that an overwhelming number of males over the age of 70 have cancer cells present in their prostate gland. However, the ones that bypassed biopsies or surgery lived normal lives and died of natural causes… not related to the prostate!

On the other hand, elderly men who received biopsies and/or surgery suffered from incontinence, impotence and severely compromised quality of life and died prematurely due to prostate cancer!

New evidence is proving that prostate cancer is quickly becoming the most over diagnosed and overly treated malady in America. I am NOT stating that this is always the case. However, I am saying that there are thousands of men who are suffering needlessly because they are misinformed.

The Real PROSTRATE Story

Every month, thousands of people visit this site looking for answers. I am honored to be a part of the consortium of minds offering advice from a myriad of modalities solely dedicated to their ultimate health and transformation.

As previously stated, sometimes it is the simple, unassuming, and unorthodox methods that yield the greatest results. To prostrate oneself means to lie down, to become humble, in an act of reverence or humility. This is the posture of prayer. I believe there are times when medicine is the appropriate solution to the problem. Sometimes a more “holistic” approach is necessary. Still other situations warrant psychological expertise.

Considering the fact that prostate health problems are solely male issues, coupled with the fact that men are “fixers” by nature, it stands to reason...

Smoke And Mirrors

Christmas in Florida by Flickr Gregory J. Urbano

Greetings from sunny Florida, where it is currently a lovely 72 degrees, Fahrenheit! There is something to be said about living in a state where instead of wearing sweaters and coats at Christmas, you are sweating and coating yourself with sunscreen. :)

Oh, and before I forget, Happy New Year! January 1st is traditionally a time to make (and often break!) a “new year” resolution. The word “resolution” simply means, “A firm, unwavering decision.” Health clubs and personal trainers know that they will have a bevy of ninety day disciples come January, complete with good intentions and bulging holiday bellies. Unfortunately, like clockwork, dreams of  “6 pack” abs and “buns of steel” soon become “6 packs” of beer and “buns of oatmeal.”

Human beings are notoriously creatures of habit, which leads me to this month’s topic, “How To Quit Smoking.” Before I proceed, let me share this disclaimer: I am a minister, not a doctor or a licensed nutritionist. Each month, this Home Cures That Work publication, offers its readers a variety of articles written by authors who focus on their area of expertise. My modality of healing is predominantly spiritual. However, in no way am I undermining the importance of doctors, psychologists or nutritionists. Though we may see through different lenses, we are all looking for the same result, a healthier more vibrant… you!

It is estimated that 26 million men (25%) and 23 million women (21%) in America smoke. Considering those numbers, few would argue that cigarette smoking is a powerful addiction. If you Google “stop smoking” a multitude of sites pop up, each with a bold promise of instant freedom from your smoking addiction.

What they do not tell you is their success rate! Why? Because a smoker can “quit” the habit on Monday and be chain smoking again by Friday! It is my prayer that this article will help you leave your addiction in the rear view mirror, for good.

In order to get free from this addiction, you must have an open mind, so open in fact, that truth can walk in right now and delete all of the misconceptions you have filed away in your mind concerning your smoking addiction. By the way, I know a little bit about addiction. In fact, in the next few months, I will be sharing how this former crack addict was set free, literally over night!

HOLY TOAST – Adrenal Fatigue and the Church

Exhaustion by Flickr Lee J Haywood

As an itinerant minister, I have the opportunity of meeting people of varying color, creed and country.  In the last 10 years, I have found one over arching commonality… exhaustion!  Let’s look at the Oxford dictionary’s definition of exhaustion. It is, well…exhaustive!

Exhaustion:

  1. Tired out, worn out, weary, dead-tired, dog-tired, bone-tired, ready to drop, drained, fatigued, enervated; (informal) beat, done in, all in, bushed, zonked, bagged, knocked out, wiped out, burned out, pooped, tuckered out, tapped out, fried, whipped.
  2. Exhausted reserves used up, consumed, finished, spent, depleted, empty, drained.

As I was reading this amusing, lengthy definition, it dawned on me that it was merely a list of symptoms, not the root cause. This “old school” term, exhaustion, was missing a prefix that explained everything… adrenal exhaustion!

The adrenal glands are two small glands (about the size of a walnut, weighing less than a grape) that sit atop the kidneys. So, when these tiny glands are depleted by physical or emotional stress, overwork, fear, trauma, etc, the body experiences, chronic fatigue, poor sleep, inability to deal with stress, B vitamin deficiency, difficulty concentrating/brain fog and even food or environmental allergies.

God’s Safety Net

.

Recall the story of Elijah, after he had successfully defeated the priests of Baal on Mount Carmel. There was a huge display of the power of God. But when Jezebel, who was just one person, threatened to kill him, Elijah panicked and ran. He had just had a high stress situation, and he was depleted of all strength. So, even though he had a victory, his body could not handle any more stress. Consider the possibility that he was undergoing temporary adrenal fatigue!  God had to take care of him by a brook and sent birds with food to feed him, until he recovered.  You, too, will recover with God’s help! He knows exactly what you need!

Considering the genius of God, I find it amazing that He has left Man, His “crowning achievement,” totally vulnerable to a pair of tiny glands. As with everything our Heavenly Father does, love is the motivator for this vulnerability.

Let me explain; have you ever looked at the back of your office computer, copy machine, printer or flat screen television? There is a tiny little fuse or circuit breaker that protects the machine from damage due to power surges, lightning strikes or polarity issues.

In the same way, our adrenal glands function as a circuit breaker that when depleted, slows the body down before any permanent damage is done.

Christians find this hard to believe, but there is just as much “burn out” within the four walls of the church as there is without. As I mentioned earlier, it is an over arching commonality, truth be told, that the world is full of “quick fried Cretans” and  “crunchy Christians.”

It is extremely difficult to get a chronically fatigued unbeliever to listen to you, if you are a chronically fatigued believer. People are looking for answers, not more questions. Lets examine some of the reasons why Christians crumble even though Jesus lives in their heart.

Works

With all the need in the world, it is important that we “stay in our own lane” and be faithful to the work God has given us to do. Remember, just because something is “good” doesn’t mean it is God!

Illusion

When we assume that because we are Christians, our bodies are impervious to overwork, stress, vitamin deficiency and exhaustion.

Remember, our “earth suits” are not glorified bodies, they are simply carriers of His glory.

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” 2 Corinthians 4:7

Self-righteousness

We would do well to remember the prophet Elijah’s trip to Horeb. Elijah did not flee to Horeb because God called him, he ran because he was afraid. Elijah was afraid Jezebel would kill him, he also thought he was the only righteous prophet God had left. When Elijah reached Horeb, God asked him a question, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah answered,

“I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me, too.” 1 Kings 19:14

When God asks you a question, He expects a truthful answer! If you read the whole story, after a powerful demonstration of power (tornado, earthquake, fire and a still, small voice), God tells Elijah He was only in the still small voice.

Then, God gives Elijah another chance to answer His question; “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Sadly, Elijah gives God the same self-righteous answer as before and it spells the end for Elijah’s earthly ministry. God ends the conversation with this statement,

”Yet, I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.” 1 Kings 19:18

Remember, self-righteousness and fear can take you on a perilous journey you were never called to, such as adrenal exhaustion.

The Turning Point

Now, lets find a prescription for our disease....

Pain Management, No Laughing Matter… Or Is It?

With out a doubt, pain management has become the hot topic in today’s health care arena. It is estimated that over 85 million Americans suffer from some type of chronic pain. Pharmaceutical companies have developed powerful drugs to bring “relief” to those suffering with chronic pain. The problem is these powerful narcotics merely “mask” the symptoms and once the effect wears off, the pain returns. Is it any wonder that people suffering from debilitating pain would become addicted to these drugs?

Oxycontin, a highly addictive narcotic (opiate) “pain killer,” has captured the tabloids with countless stories of celebrity addictions, sting operations, prominent doctors being arrested for “back door” illegal drug sales and the closing of several pain clinics in Florida and other states.

As a “natural” health advocate, my heart breaks for anyone experiencing pain or disease. However, I am in favor of a non-narcotic, non-steroidal approach to pain management with the emphasis on finding a cure instead of a crutch. The following supplements have all shown promise in alleviating chronic pain at a fraction of the cost of prescription drugs.

  • Glucosamine, Chondroitan and Methylsulfonylmethane
  • Nopal Cactus
  • Diatomaceous Earth (Organic Silica)
  • Collagen Type 2
  • Coral calcium
  • Guggul

Along with supplementation, there are some tried and true methods of therapy that I highly recommend:

  • Chiropractic care
  • Acupuncture
  • Massage
  • Cupping
  • Hydro Therapy
  • Infared Sauna

By this time you may be thinking, “I’ve tried every one of these suggestions and I don’t feel any different.” Well, read on. I have a couple more methods up my sleeve that won’t fail!...

The Science of Hope and the Secret of Overcoming

Would you be surprised to hear there really is such a thing as the science of hope? A UCLA psychologist named James Coleman did a study on humans who lose hope. He discovered shipwreck victims who lose hope die in just a few days even though physiologically they could survive many more days. The conclusion of the Coleman study was that value, meaning and hope are catalysts for mobilizing energy and finding satisfaction. No matter what the trial, the secret to overcoming has a spiritual dimension.

Each month my article in Home Cures That Work relates to the spiritual dimension of health and wellness and this month my point is that our hope is not simply in our ability to last indefinitely out on the high seas. Our hope is in the certainty that someone is coming for you. That someone is God and the one he sent to the rescue is Jesus. The Bible calls him our sure and certain hope. The certainty is that when we call out to him, he answers.

Storm Warning!

The forecast in the Bible is for more and more difficult days ahead. Focusing this monthly issue on survival is very timely as right now people in every part of the world are sorting through the present realities of recessions and depressions, shortages and civil unrest.  The things we have always taken for granted, even things like food and safety, are not guaranteed any more. Unemployment and underemployment in America is now into the double digits and regardless of your political persuasion, surely you concur this will not be getting better anytime soon.

Only a fool would believe government has the answers; and I say this as one who is an elected member of the South Dakota House of Representatives. Waiting for government to come to the rescue is a false hope, just ask the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. My encouragement to you is to take steps now to insulate yourself and your family from additional economic and social unrest....

Detox: Quieting the Cluttered Life

Silent Fast

As I write this article, the youth and young adults in our church are doing a media fast. Some of their leaders noticed how distracted teenagers are today and so they felt led to call a seven-day fast from all forms of electronic and social media. Having teenagers myself I have overheard comments that fasting from food would be easier than fasting from Facebook.

If you are still wondering, a media fast is a period of voluntary abstinence from media for the purpose of hearing God’s voice more clearly by silencing all the others. Media includes television, radio, cell phones (except emergency calls or calls from parents), texting, movies, video and computer games (Angry Birds, too!!), internet and all music except worship music.

When I was in seminary we would spend time exercising the “Spiritual Discipline of Silence.” This was back in the days of typewriters, long before texting. But even back then, at first, silence can be deafening. We are so used to so much commotion that when it is silenced, it is a bit disconcerting. However, getting quiet is a pre-requisite to getting to God know more personally and intimately.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.”

It takes a few days in quietness for my mind and heart to settle down. Few realize just how much goes on in our mind and spirit and, as a result, what that commotion and noise does to us physically and emotionally. Unprecedented numbers of people are popping pills to quell the panic and anxiety. Many more crank down the caffeine to better cope and keep up.

Ironically, all of the above merely add when what is needed is subtraction.

Quiet is the key to recharging the batteries that run and power things like our creativity and ingenuity.

Toxic Fast

One of the hats I wear, besides being a pastor, is that I’m a state legislator. Many have written me to decry the distracted driving so prevalent today as youth and young adults text while driving. When you get behind the wheel of a car your focus should be on one thing: the road before you. What is true with regard to driving is true for any who seek to navigate life successfully. The less distraction the better.

This issue of Home Cures That Work is focused on detox has other contributors addressing natural ways and the health benefits to detoxifying our bodies. Somewhere in all this, is my hope that you will come away with the understanding that so much is toxic to our bodies. Even more, so much is toxic to us physically and emotionally. Toxic means poisonous. Graphically, it is symbolized by the skull and crossbones.

.

“Pornography is inherently violent, inherently unloving. It is a perversion of sexuality, not a true form of it, and one that teaches violence and degradation at the expense of mutual pleasure and intimacy. It is about conquests, about conquering. It is the very opposite of God’s intention for sex. It tears love from sex, leaving sex as the immediate gratification of one’s most base desires. It lives beyond rules and ethics and morality. It exists far beyond love.” ~ Tim Challies

Seeing the skull and crossbones on things like rat poison and drain cleaner is common and necessary. What if we put the skull and crossbones on things like pornography or internet chat rooms? No study is needed to know that far more lives have been devastated by pornography than by people eating rat poison.

Natural health experts have made great strides in recent years bringing forth data showing how the build up of a variety of toxins in food preparation and pharmaceuticals results in a slow poisoning. Those of us who deal daily with people’s emotional and spiritual lives can make a case that there is a slow poisoning of sorts that happens when people are living lives inundated by internet and media, advertisements, endless activities and entertainment addictions. We weren’t made for any of that, we were made to interact with God.

If entertainment is a diversion of the mind, then what are you being diverted from? Or rather, what are you being diverted toward? The problem with being entertained by too many things of earthly origin is...

Help For Those Tossed About

The reason you are reading this is because somehow I survived. Young and dumb, I once ventured out on a boogie board on the north shore of the island of Oahu, near the famous and frightening Banzai Pipeline surf reef. Did I mention I am from Kansas?

I wasn’t in Kansas anymore and that surf was not safe for anyone (even according to the sign I saw later). Today, I credit God for telling those waves to spit me out on the sandy beach because getting back to the shore myself was entirely impossible. For what seemed like an eternity, I was tossed about. One moment a force with no mercy brutally slammed me on the floor of the sea, piling twenty feet of water above me. The next moment I was yanked up to the top of the waves. For one second the water was knee deep with a pull back out that was strong enough to knock me down. Then seconds later, water thirty feet deep landed on top of me. This exhausting cycle was something from which I couldn’t break out in my own strength.

Such is the mental health reality of those who struggle with bipolar disorder: one moment there is euphoria (mania) and the next moment they bottom out in deep dark depression. It is a vicious cycle from which they can not break loose. The energy and ability to function quickly dissipate and without help from something or someone outside themselves… life slips away.

Seeing people being jerked between these extremes leaves me with the impression that they are in the grips of something cruel. We know it is one of the devil’s schemes to wear down our minds (Daniel 7:25) and what better way to do that then to twist us far in opposite directions. The string of a yo-yo would break if it were subjected to the level of thrust common to bipolar disorder.

Battling the Beast

The Bible refers to the devil as a “beast,” but not because he looks like Chewbacca from Star Wars. The devil is called a beast because he is cruel to the core of his being. There is not one drip of mercy in his nature and tossing people about mentally and emotionally apparently brings him sick pleasure.

Those I know who struggle with bipolar/manic depression seem like a paddleball toy in the hand of an angry kid. One moment the ball flies high and fast only to be yanked back and smacked hard. What is fun with a little rubber ball is not so fun when it’s your head.

The Bible says Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil and liberate people from his clutches. Both of these are things we can not do in our own strength. We need someone outside ourselves. This is precisely why God sent his Son, to do what we couldn’t do –break free.

Accepting the Transitions of Life

Is Menopause a Joke?

The moment notice came that this month’s issue of Home Cures That Work would focus on menopause I knew the angle I would take in my monthly column on the Spiritual Dimension of Wellness. However, I also knew I would be unable to restrain myself from my favorite little joke on the matter of menopause.

Where is menopause mentioned in the Bible? Answer: “…and Mary rode Joseph’s a** all the way to Egypt.” My wife said, “Don’t you dare drop that in your column.”

Hopefully, I have not alienated half my audience. If so, my apologies and I should have heeded my wife’s warning. All kidding aside, the Bible does speak to every area of life and we don’t have to twist texts like that to get them to apply.

Of course, PMS and menopause are not the same thing. Menopause is part of life. It is a transition every bit as much as birth, puberty and death are transitions.

Though we think of it as primarily a female transition, the male body has its own version sometimes called male menopause, man-opause or andropause. Changing hormonal levels are normal as the human body ages and men and women transition out of a childbearing phase or season of life.

Seasonal Changes

The season of menopause is not a disease and therefore there is no cure. Granted, there are hormone therapies that mask it, but menopause is part of our design. They only way to fully avoid it would be to die early. For sure that is no solution and we are left to seek out healthy and positive strategies to navigate this normal transition.

Dealing with change is something that differs slightly from person to person. Some people are seemingly un-phased by even major changes. Others find their world turned upside down by even the slighted change. Since humans are holistic beings, when change begins to manifest in one area (physically for example), other areas (emotionally and spiritually for example) adjust themselves to the new norm.

My wife and I are a couple years away from our last teenager leaving the house. Teenagers vividly illustrate what I am describing....

Envy Rots the Bones

Grandma Was Shrinking From Osteoporosis

Growing up, a holiday ritual in our home was to line all the children up against the doorframe of the dining room and mark how much taller they were since that same time the year before. My grandmother was always impressed by how tall we were getting and I can remember how proud I was the day my mark was higher on the doorframe than her mark.

The next year we noticed her mark was even lower than it was the year before and we all giggled because grandma was shrinking. We laughed, but it was not funny to her. The next year she refused to stand in the doorframe to be marked and instead she made the comment that the reason her mark was lower was because our old house was settling.

What actually was happening is she was suffering from osteoporosis. For her funeral service years later, we put together a picture loop of her life and it was stunning to see how tall she was in her earlier years. Gravity takes its toll on us as we get older and normal aging includes some bone and stature loss.

Good Bone Health is Matter of Life Or Death

It says in Ecclesiastes 12:1-7, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ‘I find no pleasure in them…’ …when the keepers of the house tremble and the strong men stoop…” This passage is an elaborate metaphor describing the aging process and in this verse, in particular, it describes how those who once stood strong and tall, now stoop.

To oversimplify, we leave this world as we come into the world – fragile. Our bones provide the framework for the body as wood gives structure to a house. Over the years, wood naturally breaks down and begins to sag and settle. However, there are things that can speed up this breakdown, things like termites, dry rot, and exposure to water and weather. In similar fashion, this thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density that we call osteoporosis is a disease that speeds up the break down of our bones. This issue of Home Cures That Work is full of natural health remedies that will help slow down and stop osteoporosis, as well as strengthen your bones. My concern is always that we only treat symptoms and never address root causes, many of which are spiritual in nature.

My mother died of multiple myeloma. Six years after a lung transplant and taking maximum doses of anti-rejection medicines, her kidneys ceased to function properly and her bones stopped producing blood. It was remarkable to me at that time realizing how important the bones are to life. The heart may seem most important but, in fact, the bones manufacture the blood, which is the life of the body. The Bible says, “The life of every creature is its blood.” (Leviticus 17:14) When we understand the spiritual reality of the life being in the blood and the fact that bones make blood, good bone health becomes a matter of life or death.

Disdain for Others Attacks YOUR Bones

Envy by Flickr Emily the Elephant

Proverbs 14:30 tells us, “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” Each month the aim of this column is to uncover some of the root causes of physical ailments. There is no doubt we are spiritual beings as well as physical beings and it is almost universally known that the physical and spiritual are very interrelated and interdependent. Things that eat away at us spiritually and emotionally eventually eat away at us physically. With that as a basis,...

Are Bed Bugs A Wake Up Call For A Nation Spiritually Asleep?

Every one of us needs to sort out how we believe God is involved in the world today. Many may not admit they are Deists: they believe in God, but they are unwilling to give him credit or blame for any direct involvement in the world today. This is a theology of a God who had hands-on connections back in the beginning, or in Bible days, but today is pretty silent, leaving us to ourselves.

What the Bible actually says is that all things are sustained by him (Colossians 1:17), at all times. Were God to lift his hand for a mere nanosecond, even molecules at the atomic level would instantly unravel.

God is not silent today; he is always communicating, always speaking, guiding, confirming, correcting and warning. The problem is many are not familiar with the sound of his voice and few are fluent in God’s language of choice: symbolism.

Symbolism is the language throughout the Bible: significant numbers, colors, creatures and circumstances. God has even used everyday things like coats or clay pots to communicate a message. Jesus taught his disciples to see the spiritual, symbolic meaning behind everyday events.

A number of years ago, I read Murray Dueck’s fascinating book called, “If It Were A Dream, What Would It Mean? Discovering the Spiritual Meaning Behind Everyday Events.” To be clear, greater meaning and significance is not to be milked out of every little news item. However, those with prophetic sense note that there are spiritual signs of something more in transpiring events. Those with eyes to see the signs and discern deeper spiritual significance are never able to prove it is indeed God speaking; they just have a sense to guide their prayers.

Because of Dueck’s book and his fascinating examples of God speaking to the world today, you can understand how my interest was piqued last fall with this headline: “Plague of Bed Bugs Found in Empire State Building.” The word “plague” triggered ...
