His Prostate Diagnosis. Her Stress.

If your husband has prostate cancer — or any pre-cancerous prostate condition — then your loved one’s cancer is your cancer, too. The  “in sickness” part of your wedding vows has just been epitomized.

Songs of undying love and sonnets of passion don’t compete with the tangible expression of incontinence diapers, catheter pouches and being rear ended with needles.

As a wife or partner to a man with dangerous a prostate condition, it is often your responsibility to process the information, emotions and complicated symptoms. Sometimes the paperwork degenerates quickly into an unintelligible tangle, but you give strength to your husband by giving in such a tangible way. By becoming a medical advocate and the one in care of finding and supervising treatment, you are a blessing to your husband.

I hope to offer a little help to those women who often go unnoticed when a man is diagnosed with prostate cancer or a serious prostate health condition.  Wives and others care for those they love that are suffering, listen to them, cook special foods, bear fears and be a constant cheerleader – sometimes without much acknowledgement.

Dealing with Fear and Anxiety

While men are facing their own fears and anxieties about their future and their health, the fears and own concerns of their wives and partners can be just as great.

Cancer greatly impacts both partners in a couple regardless of who actually carries the diagnosis. This is particularly true of prostate cancer, the “relationship cancer.”

Since girlhood, many women are taught to appear as if everything is always under control—even when nothing could be further from the truth.

If you look at the top stressful events of life, having a cancer diagnosis or major healthy threat ranks near the top.  Thoughts like these often surface:

  • What happens if the treatment isn’t successful?
  • Will we ever be close again?
  • What if the cancer has spread?
  • What if the cancer returns?
  • What happens if I lose him?

There is an expression called “self-talk” that can be a valuable tool when you find yourself listening to the anxious talk inside of you.  The story of “thousand mirrors” serves to reflect how our attitude can change what we see is around us:

The House of a Thousand Mirrors

Long ago in a tiny village, there was a place called the House of a Thousand Mirrors. A little dog decided to visit the house. He was an unhappy dog, and his natural expression was a cross between a scowl and a sneer.

As he entered the large house, he saw a thousand mean- and scary-looking dogs staring back at him. He immediately backed away and let out a low growl to protect himself, and just as he did, all one thousand of the mean dogs growled back at him. He ran out of the house immediately and thought, “What a terrible place that is. I’ll never go back there again.”

Not long afterward, another dog decided to visit the house. As he approached, he saw how beautiful and inviting it looked and couldn’t wait to go inside. He smiled and wagged his tail in anticipation of his adventure. As he pushed open the door, he was greeted by a thousand dogs with wagging tails and big smiles approaching him. Of course he was thrilled; he had a thousand new friends he was sure would become his buddies.

The more positive you can be right now, the more smiling puppies you’ll have to cheer you on.  The lesson learned here is what we choose to give is truly what we receive in return.

Attachment is the Road to Healing

What you tell yourself and how you communicate with men is another challenge in having a loved with dangerous prostate health.  Let’s start off by saying your husband...

Removing the Smoke Screen

Not long ago on a beautiful sunny afternoon, a friend and I had just spread our picnic blanket on the grass at the edge of the crowd for a classic Spanish guitar concert downtown in our city.

Who would happen to plant himself right next to us but a burly, breathless, wrinkled-face man whose mouth was glued to a cigarette, puffing and exhaling grey smoke every few seconds.

My family knows I can’t play poker because I have no “poker face” whatsoever, so my disapproval must have shown on my face because this gaunt-looking man begrudgingly asked us, “Mind if I sit here?”

“Sure,” my friend wide-eyed friend replied.

But, our discomfort was soon voiced by his scratchy low voice, “Oh, it’s my cigarette.” Grimacing, he took one long last drag and snuffed out the cigarette in the grass.

Do I dare?  I did!  “Did you know how dangerous smoking is for your health???”

I felt my friend’s sudden firm and obvious grip on my elbow while she bellowed, “Let’s change the subject! Otherwise, I’ll have to bind and gag my friend from giving a 5-hour lecture on the evils of cigarette smoking. Let’s enjoy the concert instead.” She smiled at the man and glared at me to be silent, but I spent the entire length of the concert reviewing my anti-smoking lecture in my head hoping to give a shortened version to our stinky neighbor as soon as the concert was over.

Second Hand Damage

Let’s talk a second about the dangers of second hand smoke.  There is no question second hand smoke is harmful.  Here are some facts according to researchers at Ohio State University:

  • The spouse of a heavy smoker is 3.5x more likely to develop lung cancer than a non-smoker.
  • Second hand smoke creates high-risk pregnancies, causing fetuses to pull away from the placenta.
  • Infants who are exposed to smoke are afflicted with more colds and pneumonia.

In fact, medical tests can detect a dramatic change in platelets, which are essential to blood clotting, in subjects who spend more than 30 minutes exposed to second hand smoke.

Thankfully, America has wised up and many states across the country have smoking bans in all general workplaces and public areas.

Anti-Smoking Strategies

What can convince kids from starting a habit that can be so hard to kick? Some say each cigarette can shorten a person’s life by 5.5 minutes!  Those who smoke regularly are slashing their lifespan by about 7 years!  Would scare tactics work to turn young adults off about smoking?

Years ago, I remember schools in Minnesota asking kids in junior high what would discourage them from ever smoking.  It wasn’t the long term health dangers….It was negative social stigma: poor physical appearance (yellowed teeth, bad breath) coupled with less social acceptance. Teach them acceptance and you are teaching children to avoid smoking!

Like many of those on the “young” side, negative health consequences seem too far off in the future to worry about them.

For those of us with a few more miles logged onto the timeline of age, how can we protect ourselves and our loved ones from smoking?

Nutrients Protect

If you are subject to second hand smoke, or are looking for a strategy to quit smoking, the following nutrients will build your body strong from any smoking related damage.

  • Vitamin A helps to protect the respiratory tract by promoting healthy mucous membranes. Take 5,000-10,000 IU daily of vitamin A.
  • Vitamin E helps protect lung tissue from cigarette smoke as an anti-oxidant.  Take up to 800 IU daily of vitamin E.
  • Vitamin C fights off many toxic pollutants associated with tobacco smoke.  Take 1,500 mg or more daily of vitamin C.
  • Zinc builds your immune system to resist pollutants. Take 30 mg of zinc a day.
  • For cravings, take cayenne, which desensitizes the respiratory linings to tobacco and chemical irritants. It’s an antioxidant that stabilizes lung membranes preventing damage. The warm peppery taste also reduces cigarette cravings.
  • Oats reduce or eliminate tobacco cravings. They even reduce the number of cigarettes desired even in those people not trying to quit.

Prayer is another powerful weapon that often works miracles.  If you have repeatedly failed to break the habit – or so hopeless you want to quit quitting – you can experience cold turkey release from smoking addiction through prayer.  Find a church that has a prayer team that would be willing to pray you through a miracle.

Parents who love their kids and are interested in their welfare should stop smoking.  Smoking parents help introduce children to the habit. Unless a drastic change is made, the longevity of our children will go up in smoke.

Kids are quick to observe any contradiction between what their parents say and what they do. Despite what you might think, most kids say that the adult whom they most want to be like when they grow up is a parent. Does this motivate you to quit?

4 Reasons Why People Don’t Recover From Adrenal Fatigue

Exhaustion by Flickr iamhenry

Many people drift through life in a tired haze.  After all, who isn’t tired after work or doesn’t go through an exhausted phase of life? Recovery is highly dependent on one’s genetic predisposition, amount of stress, nourishment and power of belief.

It is not normal or healthy to feel so abnormal and unhealthy.  So, why do some people don’t recover from adrenal fatigue?

1. Ignoring the symptoms

It just may be too easy to pick up a cup of coffee or drop some change into a soda pop vending machine then it is to address the cause of the sleepy sound-off the middle of the afternoon.  Or, maybe you are too exhausted to even think about it!

The truth is many have fallen into acceptance that this is the way life is going to be and accepting the tired and exhausted state forever. Maybe you are praying that one day you would regain your health and actually be well again.  Maybe you are journaling through the rough and exhausted spent days, unable to get through your responsibilities.

You don’t have to be trapped in a weak body and under-performing body and mind. Your body is a self-healing organism and your brain can begin to restore itself.  Adrenal fatigue is treatable and you can have energy again.  Your prayers are being answered and God will direct you to the resources that will help you.

2. Taking a cocktail of supplements

I am guilty of this. In effort to restore balance when there are symptoms of an imbalance, I have masked solving my health problems by taking a “shotgun” approach of vitamins and minerals that are chucked down the throat in hopes of improving my symptoms.

This is why Home Cures That Work has been so valuable to me.  The approach to supplementation makes a huge difference in healing when you are provided with thoughtful, but not random, supplementation regimens.  For example,...

Pain Cures That Work

Chronic pain affects millions and millions of people, many of whom live in silence.

It is strange because it kind of creeps up on you. It subtly takes over you life and you don’t really realize you are having a problem until you have an acute flare-up.  Body parts degenerate after time.  It may take a while to fall apart.

You may not do the things you used to be able to do and maybe even baby yourself a little. Your life becomes smaller and you loose your sense of adventure. There are things you are afraid to do and you don’t feel yourself. You may not even recognize this departure to self until you are restored to self.  You may be feeling so bad you don’t know what the first step to take might be.

Pain is inevitable.  But, you can lessen the suffering.  Although pain and suffering are often used synonymously, pain is the signal from you body and suffering is the interpretation of that signal.

Suffering is optional.  Sometimes, when the anticipation of pain expectation is lowered, the brain is less responsive to the incoming pain signal.  Separate pain from suffering.  Pain is a sensation.  Suffering is the emotional attachment to it: depression and stories you tell yourself can mount the pain and intensity.

Accepting the Unacceptable Reality of Depression

Depression, according to John Hopkins Hospital, can exacerbate chronic pain.   Who wouldn’t be depressed knowing that every moment to come would be tainted by pain?  Depressed by the thought of no relief, not a day, an hour even a minute from driving pain.  Pain can eclipse everything as the quality of life diminishes.  It can hold you hostage with inability to cope with chronic pain.

But the answer to this mental state is simple:...

The Survival Plan to Disaster-Proof Your Home

You already know the statistics of your plane crashing:  about 1 in a million! Nonetheless, once you stow your carry-on and take your seat, do you read the safety information card? Research into plane crashes has found that people who read the safety briefing cards are more likely to survive. These rituals that we consider an utter waste of time actually give our brains blueprints in the unlikely event that we need them.

Survival is not just a product of luck. We can do far more than we think to improve our odds of preventing and surviving even the most horrendous of catastrophes. It’s a matter of preparation — actually reading the in-flight safety card before takeoff — but also of mental conditioning.

Humans are programmed with basic survival skills. When frightened, we get a shot of performance-enhancing hormones, and the blood pumps to our limbs to help us outrun whatever enemy we face. But in modern times, we are hardly aware of such natural skills and most of us do little to understand or develop them.

Firefighters, police trainers — even stockbrokers — have told stories of seeing people freeze under extreme stress. I am one of those! Like deer in the headlights of a car, I have often chosen the wrong survival response in a crisis situation. Rather than choosing to fight in a crisis situation, I have been known to freeze in my tracks — especially when it comes to talking in front if a crowd!

Many flight attendants are now trained to scream at passengers in burning planes, “Get out! Get out! Go!” People respond well to leadership in a disaster, and then they can do remarkable things.

Are you ready to anticipate the strange behaviors that you will encounter at the worst of times?

But for many of us, preparation means little more than crossing our fingers and hoping to live. Regular people can learn from that knowledge, since, after all, we will be the first on the scene of any disaster.

During a crisis, you may not have the time or resources, nor will you be in the right frame of mind to consider everything you need to do.  Here lies the importance of making well-thought out survival plan and storing supplies before disaster hits and you are surrounded by chaos, fighting, freezing or fleeing.  Take precautions now, before it is too late. This includes mental adjustments, as well as physical.

Crazy Cabbage: Cures to Cuisine

I forget how wonderful cabbage is, but when I use it: WOW!  Here are just a few of the many uses for cabbage known for its healing properties:

  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Weight loss
  • Detox
  • GERD
  • Joint pain
  • Hematoma
  • Engorged breasts
  • Headache and hangovers

Personally, I’ve just recently used it for congestion by placing cabbage leaves on my chest overnight, wrapped in ace bandages.  I also had painful lumps behind my knees after working in the garden and did the same thing with incredible results!

As a child, cabbage was the last vegetable on earth I would even consider eating.  But, as an adult, cabbage is one of my go-to cures. Who knew that such a cheap, humble looking and so widely used cabbage could work miracles?

Some apply it warm, some cold, some crush it, and some don’t.  Some wrap it ace bandages, others in plastic.  Some apply it externally; some ingest it – a food, juice or whatever.  Either which way, it works wonders!

Cabbage Fun Facts

  • Cabbage has more vitamin c than oranges, great for strengthening the immune system and being one of the best anti oxidant, reducing free radicals in your body which are the basic causes of ageing.
  • Cabbage is very rich in fiber. This helps retain water and forms the bulk of the food and the bowels. Thus, it is a good cure for constipation and related problems.
  • Cabbage is rich is sulphur, which helps to fight infections in wounds and ulcers.
  • Cabbage, being rich in iodine, helps in proper functioning of the brain and the nervous system.

Cabbage Medicinal Qualities

Uncooked cabbage is high in glutamine, an amino acid that is useful for the excellent functioning of our digestive system and immune system.  Cabbage has also been known to have therapeutic and antibacterial properties, destroying a wide variety of bacteria in the intestines.

Liberal intake of the fresh juice of this vegetable has thus been found very valuable for treating ulcers, bladder infections and other infectious disease.  Try...

When Bipolar Meds Aren’t Working, Follow Your Gut

Follow Your Gut

In my opinion, people with bipolar and depression tend to have unhealthy diets due to their illness. We are constantly trying to make ourselves feel better, and food is one way to do that. Moreover, most of us have energy and motivational issues, which result in behaviors such as less exercise and less cooking of fresh food.

“All diseases begin within the gut.” Hippocrates 460-370BC

Almost all “mental illness” is simply gut illness and poor dietary intake in disguise. Do you have digestive problems like bloating, flatulence, diarrhea, and constipation?  Do you suffer from frequent headaches, fatigue, mood swings, depression or bipolar disorder? These symptoms brought on my poor eating habits are part of your overall gut health.

Bipolar disorder always involves a gut that needs to be “cleaned out” or fixed as soon as possible before malabsorption of essential nutrients becomes severe.  Excess toxicity is also a part of all mental illness, affecting your mood and overall state of wellness. A pathogenic yeast, candida albicans, is a prime agent in many emotional and physical problems.

A Little Yeast Works A Long Way

The yeast connection is a term to indicate the relationship of superficial yeast infections in your digestive tract to fatigue, headache, depression, PMS, irritability, bipolar disorder and other symptoms that can make you feel “sick all over.”

Eating certain foods poor in adequate vitamins and minerals may increase your risk of candida overgrowth.  Antibiotic use, mood stabilizers and other chemical drug cocktails could lead to candida yeast overgrowth.

Yeast can become a hardy fungus and has an aggressive appetite. Minor increases in intestinal yeast are usually not a problem, but if yeast overgrowth is left unchallenged it can cause intestinal permeability and leak toxins across the cellular membranes. This can cause a disruption in the absorption of nutrients and nutritional deficiencies that can lead to reduced immunity and weaken the body’s defense systems and contribute to mental illness problems.

Cleansing the Body

Without proper nutrition, the body can’t heal or regenerate its tissues and if you cannot digest and assimilate food, the tissues will eventually starve. Cleansing the body and taking probiotics, and other anti-candida measures is a step toward healing.

You should consult a Naturopathic Doctor, a nutritionist that has treated bipolar disorder beforehand or an orthomolecular medicine doctor to help cure candida. Here are some steps to take to cleanse your body of unwanted candida yeast:...

Menopause: Is It All In Your Head?

You can be 54 and still be an attractive woman and feel full of energy. What may surprise you is that for some, menopause feels like a haze has been lifted and you see in a way that you haven’t been able to see before.

Until menopause, hormones, physical touch, emotions and the synapses to care, fix and help others have programmed a woman’s brain. But, in later years the brain circuits that have provided the foundations for these impulses are no longer being fueled.

Menopause is characteristically the moment 12 months after a woman’s last period and 12 months after the ovaries have stopped producing hormones that have boosted communication circuits, emotion circuits, the drive to tend and care, and the urge to avoid conflict at all costs.

All the main brain circuits to run the course are present, but the fuel for running a highly efficient engine for tracking the emotions of others has begun to run dry. As estrogen decreases through menopause, so does the calming affect of oxytocin. Even the rush of dopamine from enjoying life has diminished.

This biological truth is one of the greatest mysteries to women at this age – and to the men around them – as how the changes in hormones affect thoughts, feelings and brain functions.

Perimenopause Reward

Starting at about age 43, a woman’s brain becomes less sensitive to estrogen, accompanied by a variety of symptoms for months to years, including hot flashes, joint pain, anxiety and even depression.  The rocket fuel that feeds the sex drive (testosterone) also drops and estrogen withdrawal symptoms start with the shortening of the menstrual cycles by a day or two.  The brain’s response to glucose changes dramatically too, giving energy surges and drops, as well as cravings for sweet and carbs.

Since estrogen affects the brain’s levels of serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine other neurotransmitters that control mood and memory, it is no surprise...

Osteoporosis: Old Bones in Young Bodies

Hollywood, magazines and fashion models seem to make a statement — and standard — that being skinny is beautiful.  Many young girls who want to look attractive seem to think being underweight is healthy and becoming skinny as models will make them more beautiful.  However, one of the many side effects of being underweight, besides a lower immune system and low blood pressure, is osteoporosis.

Celebrities who appear regularly on the cover of magazines, or as guests on talk shows, have faces and bodies that hordes of young women are tempted to emulate.  But “a delicate beauty” or “wafer-thin” slim physique are simply maintained via diet and exercise, or so we are told.

We read about strict diets, macro-biotic diets, dairy-free diets, vegan diets, no processed foods allowed diet and strict versions of “ultra-healthy” habits.  Add heavy exercise routines, which include 2-hour workouts every day and where calories are pouring out sweaty skin. Sounds great, right?  Then how come many  “roll models” are diagnosed with osteopenia before they hit 40 years of age?

A low-calorie, dairy-free diet with tons of exercise and lack of sunlight can head a young woman down the road to osteoporosis.

Is bone loss the price you want your beautiful daughter or granddaughter to pay for the ultimate “ideal” body shape?

Teens, tweens and young adults idolize celebrities, models and TV or movie stars in designer clothes.  But, there is long-term health damage happening underneath the “skinny” jeans, leggings, short shorts and tank tops.

Don’t be fooled. Even high school girls can develop osteoporosis in today’s media-driven culture.  “Skinnier is better” is a message to fight because paying the price of excessive dieting and exercise to the extreme causes lower estrogen production and can eventually lead to osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis by taufik rizal on Flickr

Estrogen is needed to help keep bones strong.  Without it, bones can become thin and brittle, which is why women in menopause can experience a drop in bone density. On the other end of the spectrum, young girls achieve approximately 90% of their bone mass by the age of 18. Osteopenia is increasingly a commonly recognized sign of an eating disorder in young adults across the country. When a young woman’s body should be increasing bone growth, heavy exercise and poor dieting can fail to develop strong bones during her critical growing periods.

Broken bones are a huge price to pay for style.  Check in with your young daughters or granddaughters to find if she is working towards a particular body type.  Skinny is not better, nor are osteoporosis symptoms: bent back, broken hip, vertebrae compressions and fractures.  Osteoporosis is not an old lady’s disease.  It is the future of models, celebrities and actresses – but not for your precious daughters.

The truth is the more bone you can lay down before 30 years of age, the more bone you maintain through your 30s and 40s.  In order to maintain bone health in your later years, you need to set the stage in the beginning. Now let’s find out how diet can both help your bones – and hurt them....

How to Fight Bed Bugs and Win

“You want me to do WHAT???  For how long?”

These are the words of my dear friend who was recently told how she needed to comply in order for her apartment to be treated for bed bugs.  This were the orders she was given before the fumigation began:

  • Run ALL her clothes through a high heat dryer cycle and bag in sealable bags – or dry clean all applicable wardrobe pieces.
  • Strip all beds, clean and launder sheet and also place in sealable bags.
  • Break down and safely dispose of unwanted beds, furniture, mattresses and more.
  • Pull all furniture 8 inches away from the wall to allow for proper inspection and treatment.
  • Empty and pack items from dresser drawers, bureaus, nightstand, bookshelves, wall units, closets and more.
  • Perform detailed crack and crevice vacuuming throughout apartment including rugs, sofas, cribs etc..
  • Treat non-treatable items that cannot be washed or dry cleaned with specialized solution that kills bed bugs on contact.
  • Order corrugated boxes to pack all food items.
  • Seal up the boxes properly to prevent any spread of bed bugs into or out of that area.
  • Pack all items of clothing that will not be needed into suitable boxes to be stored or sent off for fumigation.
  • LIVE like this for 3 weeks!!!

Do you know how many bed bugs she found?...
