10 Medicinal Herbs, Oils and Foods of the Bible

This may seem like an unusual theme for an article, but allow me to explain my perspective. When we begin to delve into the wonders of the natural world, it’s absurd to me to think that this all could have happened “by chance.” There are simply too many variables; too many contingencies; too many dependencies in nature to try to explain their intricacies and interdependencies on happenstance.

Instead, I firmly believe that what we enjoy in nature today is the work of our Creator. I believe, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) I also believe that God continues to sustain and uphold all things and that He is active in our lives whether we choose to acknowledge Him or not. Psalm 104:13-15 bears this out beautifully in poetic form:

He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate—bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains their hearts.[1]

If this perspective is true, then it should come as no surprise to us that our Creator has provided for us some amazing natural remedies. Some of these are so accessible that we can pluck them from the garden or the forest. Others require a refining process of some kind and we wonder, “How in the world did mankind ever discover this?”

When we look at some of the healing herbs and oils of the Bible, I caution us not to award them any special prominence. While some of the Bible is prescriptive (telling us how we should live), much of it is descriptive (telling us how people of that era and locale lived). And in the case of these herbs, oils and foods, certainly these represent gifts from God to us, but they are not “God’s prescription” for us.

The Bible and the herbs and oils it describes center around the Middle East and ancient times. The people of that day used what was at hand. In other parts of the world and in other climates we enjoy some of the same herbs and oils, but also many different ones not available in the Middle East.

So what makes the herbs and oils of the Bible so special? It’s simply the wonder of knowing that those who lived thousands of years before us struggled with many of the same health issues that we face. Even back then, they enjoyed an amazing natural medicine chest stocked for them by their (and our) loving Creator, God. And we can enjoy these too.

1. Dill

If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering, “What’s dill good for besides making dill pickles?” Matthew 23:23 mentions dill as an herb that was commonly grown in Bible times. As an herb, dill grows in many places all over the world. You may even grow it in your herb garden. Dill is extremely versatile and both the seeds and leaves are used in foods and medicines.

Dill’s medicinal values come primarily from monoterpenes compounds, flavonoids, minerals and amino acids.[2] These components act as an antioxidant and neutralize particular types of carcinogens, such as the smoke generated from roasting, grilling, charring or frying food.

Dill has been effective in the relief of:

  • Insomnia
  • Diarrhea
  • Dysentery
  • Menstrual disorders
  • Respiratory issues
  • Fungal and bacterial infections

Dill can also:

  • Boost the immune system and digestion
  • Help prevent arthritis and even cancer
  • Promote bone health
  • Help manage insulin levels in those with diabetes[3], [4], [5]

Make dill tea by crushing two teaspoons of dill seeds, steeping them in a cup of boiling water for ten minutes, and then straining.[6] You can also simply chew on dill seeds to reap their health benefits. Dill essential oil and dried dill leaves are also available as supplements.

2. Mint

Like dill, mint is also referred to in that passage in Matthew’s Gospel. Most of us are aware of the fresh, cool flavor of mint that’s used today in a wide variety of applications. But mint also packs some amazing health benefits. Of all foods known to mankind, mint is one of the highest in antioxidants.[7]

  • Mint also possesses anti-inflammatory properties due to rosmarinic acid. This compound is noted for its ability to provide relief from seasonal allergies and keep breathing airways open.[8]
  • Mint’s natural aromatic ingredient menthol helps relieve the common cold, indigestion, nausea, gas, and irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Peppermint extract is also an excellent pain reliever.
  • Mint oil can also provide relief from insect bites and rashes.[9]
  • Mint aroma is also known to calm a person suffering depression or fatigue.[10]

You can chew mint leaves, make a tea from its leaves by steeping dried leaves for 10 minutes, or applying mint oil according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.

3. Cumin

This herb is the third one mentioned in that Matthew passage above. The active ingredients in cumin include cuminaldehyde and thymol. In particular, these two compounds activate the salivary glands that help digest food and relieve the distress of gas. This seed of good digestion stimulates the secretion of pancreatic enzymes, compounds necessary for proper digestion and nutrient assimilation. Cumin seeds and cumin essential oil pressed from its seeds provide its health benefits.

Cumin is used to treat:

  • Piles
  • Insomnia
  • Respiratory disorders
  • Asthma
  • Bronchitis
  • Anemia
  • Skin disorders and boils
  • Cancer (protects against stomach or liver tumors)

Additionally, cumin has anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties.[11] It also improves the immune system.[12]

You can make a tea by boiling two teaspoons of cumin seeds in water and steeping for ten minutes. Or, introduce cumin into your cooking by grinding cumin seeds to a powder using a mortar and pestle. Cumin compliments garbanzo beans, black beans, brown rice, as well as vegetables. Cumin seed essential oil is also available.

4. Rue

Rue, a less common herb, is mentioned in Luke 11:42. Rue grows wild or cultivated and displays a pretty yellow flower. Today, rue flourishes wild across North America in zones 6 through 11. Rue is more of a shrub than a plant and grows up to two feet tall.[13]

Rue is a good source of flavonoids and boasts an impressive set of medicinal compounds. Rue possesses properties as an antidote to poison, an anti-arthritic, anti-rheumatic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, insecticidal, sedative, digestive, anti-epileptic, and anti-hysteric.[14]

How to Eat and Drink your Turmeric

Turmeric: A Tasty Ingredient with Healing Power

Perhaps the spice turmeric conjures up some of the vivid sights, sounds and smells of India. This exotic yellow herb has been a part of India’s culinary culture for centuries. But the rich heritage of turmeric doesn’t end at the palate. Turmeric also holds a prominent position in India and other parts of the world for its powerful medicinal properties. And it’s coming into its own in the US as well.

More specifically, curcumin is the active compound in the pungent spice turmeric that renders its healing powers. Curcumin ranks among the most potent anti-inflammatory compounds known to man. (Equal or better than hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone and other over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, but without the nasty side effects of those drugs.)[1]

If you’re looking to get the health benefits of turmeric, pair it with pepper. Black pepper improves the bioavailability of turmeric, making smaller doses more effective. To get the most out of your turmeric add 3% black pepper to the mix. This works out to about 1/2 teaspoon of ground pepper to 1/4 cup of turmeric. To make it easy, simply premix pepper into your jar of turmeric.

A cousin of ginger, turmeric is also a root (actually, a rhizome) with a deep golden color and a sharp, slightly bitter flavor. You can find ground turmeric in the spice section of any grocery store. More recently, fresh turmeric root is available in the produce section of many grocery and specialty stores. To use the fresh root, you first need to peel it. Then simply grate with a microplane grater or cut off whole pieces. You can wrap the unused portion tightly in plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for a week to 10 days.

There are plenty of recipes that employ turmeric – especially curries – but how do you get turmeric into your diet every day? Below you’ll find a delicious recipe for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus a bonus recipe.[3] So let’s get started!

Breakfast: Spicy Potatoes and Scrambled Eggs[4]

  • 2 potatoes, scrubbed
  • 4 Tbsp vegetable oil, divided
  • 3 eggs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp ground coriander
  • ½ tsp ground turmeric
  • ½ tsp chili powder


  1. Pierce potatoes with a fork or knife and microwave on high until they are cooked through. Once fully cooked, peel and cut into small cubes and set aside.
  2. Pour 2 tablespoons of oil into a skillet and scramble the 3 eggs, adding salt and pepper to taste. Cover to keep warm until potatoes are ready.
  3. In another skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of oil, then mix in all the spices and add the potatoes. Cook these until they’re golden brown and crispy.
  4. Stir eggs and potatoes in together and serve hot.

Lunch: Tacos with Turmeric Spiced Chicken and Tomato Avocado Salsa[5]

This recipe three parts: the turmeric spiced chicken, the tomato avocado salsa, and the tacos. You’ll need a total prep time of at least 30 minutes. (Read directions first.)

Turmeric Spiced Chicken Ingredients

  • Tacos with Turmeric Spiced Chicken and Tomato Avocado Salsa2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper
  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, trimmed

Tomato Avocado Salsa ingredients

  • 6 medium vine-ripened tomatoes, cut into ½-inch chunks (2 ½ cups)
  • 2 avocados, peeled and cut into ½-inch chunks (1 ½ cups)
  • ½ cup coarsely chopped red onion
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 2 Tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • ½ tsp ground turmeric


  • 2 cups shredded lettuce
  • 8 flour tortillas (8-inch)


  1. To prepare the chicken, mix the oil and all the spices in a small bowl. Place the chicken in a large glass bowl. Add the prepared marinade and coat all chicken pieces well. Refrigerate 30 minutes or more for extra flavor.
  2. Meanwhile, prepare the salsa. Mix all ingredients in a medium bowl and cover. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  3. Remove chicken from marinade and discard remaining marinade. Grill chicken over medium-high heat 6 to 8 minutes per side or until cooked through. Cut chicken into thin strips.
  4. Place ¼ cup lettuce on each tortilla and add chicken and salsa. Fold and roll tortillas to serve up to eight people.

Dinner: Turmeric Shrimp Stew[6]

Turmeric Shrimp StewIngredients

  • 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 pounds whole shelled shrimp
  • 1 ¼ tsp garlic salt
  • ¾ tsp ground turmeric
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • 4 cups peeled and cubed potatoes
  • 3 cups organic chicken broth
  • 1 ½ cups frozen peas and carrots
  • Pepper, to taste


  1. Heat oil in 5-quart Dutch oven on medium heat. Add onion; cook and stir 5 minutes or until softened.
  2. Add shrimp; cook and stir until no longer pink. Add all remaining spices. Cook and stir 1 minute.
  3. Stir in potatoes and broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium; simmer uncovered 15 minutes.
  4. Add peas and carrots and simmer 10 more minutes or until vegetables are tender.
  5. Serve over rice or pasta if desired.

Anti-Aging Coconut Turmeric Smoothie[7]

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup diced pineapple
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tsp ground (or freshly grated) turmeric
  • 2 tsp chia seeds
  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil
  • Pinch of black pepper


Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy!

Considering that inflammation plays a major role in most chronic illnesses, an anti-inflammatory agent like turmeric spice is perfect for prevention purposes. Food for Joint Pain

I’ve often heard people chalk up their joint pain and stiffness to their increasing age. Many people believe that joint pain is just part of the territory as we get older.  However, with the proper diet, we can prevent, slow, or even stop joint pain!

Although many people are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, not all joint pain is caused by this devastating autoimmune disease.  Believe it or not, the cause may lie entirely in what you eat!

Certain foods can actually cause joint pain.  The reason why isn’t always clear, but many times these substances seem to aggravate our body. This aggravation can result in unpleasant pain, inflammation, and stiffness.  It is almost as if your body is telling you that it’s angry when a certain food is put into your body.

Now, your job is to simply listen to your body’s cry for help by eliminating those foods and replacing them with healthy alternatives.

Sugar and Joint Pain

No one likes seeing sugar on the list of foods that are bad for us.  But, you just can’t hide from it.  Sugar can cause all kinds of diseases ranging from diabetes to cancer.  Unfortunately, it can cause joint pain and stiffness, as well.  You may love that sweet taste on your lips, but your body may be crying out in pain.

Avoiding all sugar is best.  But the top sweet health-busting contributors to stay away from are:

  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Sucrose
  • White sugar
  • Glucose

Artificial Sweeteners and Joint Pain

As you can see above, I didn’t mention artificial sweeteners on my list of safe sweeteners.  That was for a good reason!  Artificial sweeteners are far worse than sugar!  These lab created chemicals have often been linked to joint pain, muscle pain and stiffness.  Some people have even experienced symptoms of full-blown MS (multiple sclerosis) from consuming artificial sweeteners! And that, unfortunately, isn’t all.

There is a long laundry list of diseases that can be caused by artificial sweeteners, including many forms of cancer!  The most common artificial sweeteners on the market are:

  1. Aspartame (Nutrasweet)
  2. Saccharine (Sweet and Low)
  3. Sucralose (Splenda)

You can look at the science behind why these sweeteners are so toxic to the body.  But it boils down to something very simple to understand —- they’re not real food!  Anytime you put some sort of unnatural product in your body, you’re likely to have unnatural side-effects.  A great example is the long list of possible side-effects listed on every pharmaceutical and over-the-counter drug.

The reality is that these lab created sweeteners are essentially drugs with a dirty little secret.  They may be FDA approved, but it doesn’t mean they are side-effect free!! Click to tweet this.

  • Saccharin is a potential carcinogen that is linked to bladder cancer.
  • Aspartame is linked to depression, cancer, headaches and increased hunger, to name a few. Over consumption even has a name: aspartame poisoning, which includes joint pain as one of its symptoms.
  • Sucralose – discovered while creating a new insecticide and is widely associated with gastrointestinal problems, cutting the population of the good bacteria in your gut in half within a few weeks.
  • Acesulfame K, while lesser known, is also a carcinogen. It’s long term use leads to a host of problems, including mental decline, cancer, liver and kidney problems, as well as headaches and depression.

I highly suggest you remove all artificial sweeteners from your diet.  Not just to help with your aches and pains, but for your overall health!

Saving calories isn’t worth when it comes to these chemical sweeteners! Sweeteners are not essential nutrients in our diet, so they exist to nurture our sweet tooth, not our bodies. Remember, there is nothing in our diet that we can consume without a cost.

Caffeine and Joint Pain

We live in a society absolutely addicted to caffeine.  Energy drinks, coffee shops, and chocolate are everywhere!   Although consuming caffeine in moderation doesn’t typically cause any health issues, over indulging can cause joint pain.  And by over indulging, I mean more than one cup of coffee a day.  Don’t forget that soda and decaf coffee contain caffeine, as well!

There is no definitive research as to why caffeine can cause joint pain.  However, some believe it is because caffeine is such a strong diuretic.  Diuretics can cause systemic dehydration, which can lead to a buildup of uric acid.  This causes a painful condition of the joints called gout.  Also, dehydration of the joint itself can occur causing stiffness and pain. Many people have seen significant reduction in joint pain by eliminating caffeine.  It is definitely worth giving it a try!

Food Allergies and Joint Pain

When people think of a food allergy, they typically associate it with digestive upsets or anaphylactic shock.  But not all food allergies manifest in the same way. There are people who may go their entire lives not knowing they have a food allergy because it’s manifestations aren’t typical.  They are still having an immune response, even if mild.   Although it is not as noticeable as other allergies, this subtle reaction can cause inflammation and pain in your joints!

Food allergies can develop at any age.  Your body may have tolerated a food most of your life, but eventually your immune system begins to overreact.  Inflammation is a very common immune response to food allergens.  Hives, bloating, and itchy watery eyes are all manifestations of the inflammatory response in our bodies.

However, an inflammatory response can also manifest in your joints. After all, an allergic antibody can attached itself to any tissue in the body. If it affixes to your joints, the offensive food can cause worsening joint symptoms.  Pain, swelling, and damage to your joints can occur entirely based on a food you’re eating!  What is amazing is that if you eliminate that food, your pain can be entirely resolved!

Maybe your joint pain isn’t constant. You may notice an increase in pain that later decreases.  You might have had no idea that there is food association. You can have an allergy test performed by your doctor, but they aren’t always accurate.

Keeping a food log is a great way to identify particular culprits.  I also recommend eliminating high allergen foods for at least 3 weeks and slowly introducing them back into your diet one at a time.  Below, I will cover the most common joint aggravating food allergen culprits.

Gluten and Joint Pain

One of the most common of all food allergies is gluten.  Gluten is a component of several grains including wheat, barley, and rye. It is estimated that 1 out of 133 people have one of the most severe forms of a gluten allergy called Celiac disease.  However, you don’t have to be a full-blown Celiac to be sensitive to gluten.  Some doctors and researchers are estimating that as many as 50% of Americans may fall somewhere onto the spectrum of gluten disorders!

Although many of the manifestations can be gastrointestinal, many possible side-effects include headaches, foggy thinking, numbness in fingers, arms and legs, fatigue and…you guessed it…joint pain.

Luckily, because of the rapid rise in gluten disorders there has also been a rise in gluten-free food alternatives. I personally struggle with a mild gluten sensitivity and have relied on gluten-free products for years.  My personal favorite is using rice noodles as a substitute in pasta dishes.  You can hardly tell a difference! Quinoa is another delicious grain that is high in protein, as well as gluten free.

Milk Products and Joint Pain

I know you don’t want to hear it.  First wheat and now milk!!  You’re thinking, “What is there left to eat?”  First, I must say that these are “possible” allergens.  And to be honest, if you are allergic, you will love how you feel when you don’t eat them much more than you love the taste in your mouth!

There is a difference between a milk allergy and lactose intolerance.  Lactose intolerance is when you lack the enzyme, lactase, which breaks down lactose.  Most of the symptoms of lactose intolerance are gastrointestinal.  A milk allergy is far less common than lactose intolerance, but is still a common food allergy.

And like any food allergy, milk can cause a flare up of swelling in the joints. There are numerous testimonies online that have restored pain free joints through the elimination of milk from their diet and break the inflammatory cycle.  Imagine, you can move like a teenager again simply by choosing to avoid dairy!

Like wheat, there are now many milk alternatives on the market.  Almond and coconut milks are the healthiest choices.  I would highly advise against consuming soy milk products, as soy is a high allergen food, as well.

Peanuts and Joint Pain

Again, when we think of a peanut allergy, we imagine an “emergency situation.”  But, you could have a slight allergy to peanuts and have no clue!  Does anyone in your immediate family have a known peanut allergy?  Because genetics play such a strong role in allergies, they often run in families.  If your brother, sister, mom or dad, or one of your children has a peanut allergy, then you may very likely have one, as well!  You may have assumed because you don’t go into anaphylactic shock when you have a PB&J that you’re out of the woods.  Not so! Your allergic response may be more mild, but it can still cause body discomforts like joint pain.

Peanuts also often have mold.  You may not taste it or see it, but it’s likely there.  So, it may not even be the peanut causing your mild allergic reaction and possible joint pain, but the mold that it contains. Peanuts are also high in linoleic acid, an omega-6 essential fatty acid, which can increase your inflammatory response, causing pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints.

Peanuts, thankfully, are quite easy to eliminate.  I recommend almonds instead.  They rarely have mold and are far less likely to be an food allergen. Imagine, getting off or stopping pain medication could be as simple as avoiding peanuts!

Artificial Everything

Earlier in the article, I touched on artificial sweeteners and their toxic effects on the body.  However, most anything artificial that you put inside your body has the potential for causing an allergic response, which can directly affect joint pain.

Again, it’s quite simple.  If it’s artificial, then your body isn’t going to recognize it as food.  Your immune system will instead see foreign invaders and the allergic and inflammatory responses will begin.  The pain in your joints will be aggravated by simply daily activities, thereby reducing your mobility and flexibility.

There is truly no way around it.  Our body is hard-wired to react to foreign substances in our body.  But the remedy is easy.  The natural way to relieve the discomfort is to eat real food!  No more artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Chances are if you can’t pronounce it, then it isn’t a real food.  Always read the labels on your foods.  You never know what can be hiding in what you eat!

Overall, you can’t go wrong by favoring simple, whole foods as opposed to processed convenience foods.

Healthy Joints from Healthy Foods

Now that I’ve told you what foods can cause or contribute to joint pain, I’m going to give you a quick guide to what foods can help joint pain!  The best foods for your joints contain one or more of these nutrients:

  • Antioxidants
  • Anti-inflammatory agents
  • High levels of vitamins and minerals
  • Healthy fats

The best way to pack your diet full of foods high in vitamins, mineral, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatories is to eat a colorful diet.  Some of the most nutrient dense foods have the most pigment dense colors!  Some of these natural weapons for joint pain include:

  • Turmeric (a spice high in anti-inflammatory properties)
  • Blueberries
  • Avocados
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Broccoli
  • Pomegranates

The more fruits and veggies you pack into your diet, the more pain reducing nutrients you are putting into your body!

Healthy fats, specifically omega-3s, are scientifically proven to improve joint pain.  My favorite sources of omega-3 fats include:

  • Sardines
  • Salmon
  • Chia seeds
  • Flax seeds

By altering what you eat, you can expect positive changes in your health, and your joints, with life saving benefits for the rest of your life.

Recipes for Joint Health

As I mentioned earlier, quinoa is a grain that is not only gluten free, but also very high in protein.  One cup has twenty-four grams of protein!  As its popularity has grown it’s becoming easier to find quinoa on grocery shelves.  This grain is well tolerated and easily digested.  I have seen it used in everything from chili recipes to middle-eastern dishes.

One of my favorite ways of preparing it is in a salad.  You can add your favorite vegetables and modify it to your taste.  It is both fast and easy to prepare and would be a great gluten-free dish to bring to potluck dinners!

Colorful Quinoa Salad


  • quinoa salad4-6 cups of prepared quinoa that has been chilled (prepare according to the package directions)
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 orange bell pepper
  • 1 head of broccoli
  • A couple handfuls of grape tomatoes
  • 6 green onions

Directions: Dice your vegetables and toss with the quinoa grains.   Pour on the dressing right before serving and toss lightly.



  • ¼ cup of olive oil
  • 1 tbsp of organic apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tsp of all-purpose seasoning like Spike or Braggs
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 packet of stevia

Directions: Whisk together until well blended.

When it comes to changing our diet, we often forget about the little things.  However, some of the worst ingredients can hide unassumably in our everyday condiments!

Jams and jellies are not only packed with sugar or corn syrup, but some even contain artificial colors and flavors.  Below, is a lightly sweetened strawberry jam that uses omega-3 containing chia seeds as the thickener.  I think you’ll love the results and your body will thank you!

Strawberry Chia Jam*

strawberry chia jamIngredients:

  • 2 cups strawberries – cleaned and chopped
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup chia seeds
  • 1/4 cup honey


  1. Place all ingredients into a metal pot and bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat slightly so the contents of the pot don’t splatter all over your stove, but still bubbles in the pot.
  3. Stir constantly! The chia seeds burn on the bottom of the pot very easily.
  4. Stir and boil until the mixture has reduced by half and has thickened. Again, it will not be as thick as jam, but it still definitely thickens.
  5. Pour into a clean glass jar and allow to cool for 1 hour. Place in the fridge overnight to continue cooling.

Throw out that artificial food and instead fill your diet with beautiful, colorful, low allergen foods. You won’t only see a reduction in joint pain, but an improvement in your overall health!  Food truly can be medicine for the body!

A pain in your joints and can aggravate the smallest daily activities, leading to reduced mobility and flexibility of the body. But by fueling your body with natural anti-inflammatory foods, and keeping away from any food allergies, you can keep your joints flexible and well-nourished.

Crohn’s Disease Treatment Without Medication

Sally was a pretty blonde young woman from New Zealand who had been suffering with diarrhea, constipation, cramps, nausea, and blood in her stool for more than three years.  She had been to several doctors in Australia and the United States and was eventually diagnosed with Crohn’s disease.  In spite of trying every medication to stop it, it only got worse.  Eventually, she had developed all the worst complications, including abscesses and fistulas, and the surgeons had to remove several large portions of her bowel, leaving her with a colostomy bag.  She didn’t like the bag at all and was hoping for a way to re-connect her colon.

One day she was eating a pomegranate and noticed she didn’t have any pain that night.  The next day she ate another pomegranate, and, still no pain.  She decided to continue eating them.  As long as she ate one pomegranate per day, she had no symptoms of Crohn’s disease.  She was feeling normal, and was able to have her colon repaired and the bag removed.

One day, she went to the store and there were no pomegranates!  None of the other stores had any either.  She started getting her pain and diarrhea back.  It was miserable!  She tried the pomegranate juice in bottles, but it didn’t work at all.  She remains dependent on fresh pomegranates, when she can get them, to relieve the symptoms of her illness.

Crohn’s disease is one of the “Inflammatory Bowel Diseases” (IBD) which afflict about 1.4 million people in the United States, according to CDC estimates.  This is different from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), though they have some similar symptoms.

  • IBS is spastic and not inflammatory.
  • Crohn’s disease, however, causes ulcerations in the lining of the bowel, bloody diarrhea, obstruction, abscesses, and fistulas.  The inflammation wreaks havoc on the intestines, preventing the absorption of nutrients.  Many get deficiency diseases and even protein malnutrition.

Does surgery help?

As you can see, Crohn’s is a serious illness leading to disability and death, if not cared-for properly.  It is very unfortunate when a person must have surgery for obstruction, abscess or fistulas because the illness itself may affect the surgical site and cause worse problems.  They also develop scar tissue and adhesions (where the intestines stick from scar tissue to the wall of the abdomen) causing pain and further risk of obstruction.  For this reason, surgery is a last resort to prevent immediate death from obstruction or infection.

No Pain, No Gain? The Best Natural Relief

I decided to watch a bit of the Ironman competition the other night.  They began to feature a man named Lew Hollander.  He looked around 65 years old and they said he was about to complete his 21st Ironman competition.  That in itself was shocking, but then they went on to say that he was not 65 as I thought, but 80 years old!  My jaw dropped.  Lew Hollander is truly a testimony of what our bodies are capable of doing.

Many people believe that pain, discomfort and lack of physical fitness come with age.  They believe there is nothing you can do about it and you just have to “survive” the best you can.  This is not true!  Our bodies are amazing creations and made to function without pain and discomfort well into our “old age.”

If we experience pain and discomfort, then our body is giving us a message: something is out of balance.  Instead of taking medication to dull the pain, the key is to find the cause of the imbalance and correct it.

Inflammatory Pain

The #1 cause of pain is inflammation.  Whether you are dealing with fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis or just over-all aches and pains, inflammation is the likely culprit.

Could Indian Food Help Fight Pain?

Within the cornucopia of medicinal plants, few possess such a wide spectrum of qualities and medicinal uses as turmeric. It has been used to treat a myriad of disease and ailments around the world for countless centuries.  The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory effectiveness, but is also praised as an alternative analgesic, antibacterial, antibacterial, antiseptic, anti-tumor, anti-allergic with many other healing qualities now being recognized and understood by modern science.

Let the Soothing Begin with Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus has natural anti-inflammatory properties to rub in and soak in!

I recently found a bag of eucalyptus leaves in the basement as I was (deep) spring cleaning. They were put away years ago after being used decoratively in a vase and wall hanging. I forgot what was in the bag when I found it, but the beautiful smell quickly reminded me there were dried eucalyptus branches inside! Since the wall-hanging days long ago and my natural health interest has peaked with battling cancer, I began wondering how I could put these eucalyptus leaves to use.

What I found was that dried eucalyptus leaves are good for only a few things:

  • Eucalyptus Tea: Pour 1 cup of boiled water over up to 1/2 tsp of the dried eucalyptus leaves, Cover and steep for 10 minutes; strain. Sweeten with honey. Drink up to 2-3 cups/day.
  • Sachets: Stuff-dried eucalyptus leaves into small cotton or muslin drawstring bag and place in drawers or closets to diffuse the eucalyptus scent.

The Prevalence Of Inflammation And The Tyranny That Promotes It

The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) figures about 70% of people around the world trust and count on “alternative health care” or “holistic healing.”

Finally, the natural, time-tested approach to healthcare is rapidly gathering acceptance by health care providers and big league HMOs like Oxford Health Plans, Inc.
