Survive Any Catastrophic Event By Storing Food For The Long Haul

They Laughed When I Told Them They Needed a Survival Guide. But Then the Prophecies Started Coming True…

How to live “off the grid” and survive any catastrophic event – even the Apocalypse

From the Mayan calendar’s end in December 2012 to the ravings of the Christian radio host  Harold Camping who keeps predicting the world’s end, we have all been told of catastrophic changes that will leave all of us doomed.

Speaking of Camping, here is a funny thing about that guy. Every time his predictions fail to come to fruition, he is kind enough to move the date of judgment forward so we can relax and have some more time to live life as we now know it. It reminds me of the old Henny Youngman bit where he talks about Dr. Wellsler, “Wonderful doctor gave the guy 6 months to live. When he couldn’t pay his bill, he gave him another 6 months!”

Now, while we do not put any stock into these “predictions,” we do believe in being prepared for anything that comes down the pike.

Have you noticed that storms are getting stronger and more frequent? Earthquakes are happening all over the place…tsunamis, tornadoes and wildfires – oh my!

The fact of the matter is we’re not immortal. We need to do whatever we can to live as long as we can so when we finally do pass on, it won’t be because we failed to be prepared for an event that does not need to claim our precious life.

This is the information you need to protect yourself and your loved ones

This month, we are handing you the best information we know to help you survive any catastrophic event — or even take you “off the grid” right now if you want.

You do not have to be a slave of the health care system that is a very unfunny joke. The trouble is we have been conditioned into thinking we need all these things: expensive cars and homes, HDTV, HBO, the internet, laptops and phones that can blow out candles. (It’s true there is an smart phone app for that).

You do not need any of those things to survive. Frankly, if you were hit with a major, game changing event, then you could lose power, the cable/internet, and cell service as signal towers crumble into the dirt like a house of cards.

Even if nothing happens, you will still want to take a look at this. Truthfully, it is useful no matter how you slice it. At the very least, it could save you a good chunk of money.

Store food for the long haul like a squirrel for the winter

Egg-static Results!

First, you are going to need food. Just like mister squirrel getting ready for the winter, you need to store enough to get you through a crisis situation.

One of the coolest little tricks you can have in your survival arsenal is ...

Nature’s First Aid Kit

natural first aid kit by flickr mayalu

Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes–nature has not spared her fury recently. If you have not been affected, you probably know someone who has. Because of this, survival kits have been growing in popularity. People are even starting to take food and water storage more seriously. However, one thing that most disaster planning kits lack is natural medicines.

Most of us do not have access to antibiotics and other prescription meds to add to our survival kits. You might have a first aid kit, but are you stocked up with products that could combat illness? Should a biological attack or deadly flu virus sweep the nation, would you have the resources available to combat its threat? There are several things I feel are essential to stock up on and store in case of a disaster or outbreak. If a true disaster was to occur and you had no access to medical treatment, having certain natural remedies on hand could save your life.

I have put together what I feel is a thorough and effective “Natural First Aid Kit.” This is not a substitute to a regular first aid kit, but rather something to add to it. Many of these natural medicines are just as effective as prescription drugs, specifically antibiotics.

Take note that several of these supplements have proven in labs to kill the bird flu and the swine flu. If a biological attack were to ever occur, you would have a cabinet full of immune boosters and virus and bacteria killers to combat that attack.

The Science of Hope and the Secret of Overcoming

Would you be surprised to hear there really is such a thing as the science of hope? A UCLA psychologist named James Coleman did a study on humans who lose hope. He discovered shipwreck victims who lose hope die in just a few days even though physiologically they could survive many more days. The conclusion of the Coleman study was that value, meaning and hope are catalysts for mobilizing energy and finding satisfaction. No matter what the trial, the secret to overcoming has a spiritual dimension.

Each month my article in Home Cures That Work relates to the spiritual dimension of health and wellness and this month my point is that our hope is not simply in our ability to last indefinitely out on the high seas. Our hope is in the certainty that someone is coming for you. That someone is God and the one he sent to the rescue is Jesus. The Bible calls him our sure and certain hope. The certainty is that when we call out to him, he answers.

Storm Warning!

The forecast in the Bible is for more and more difficult days ahead. Focusing this monthly issue on survival is very timely as right now people in every part of the world are sorting through the present realities of recessions and depressions, shortages and civil unrest.  The things we have always taken for granted, even things like food and safety, are not guaranteed any more. Unemployment and underemployment in America is now into the double digits and regardless of your political persuasion, surely you concur this will not be getting better anytime soon.

Only a fool would believe government has the answers; and I say this as one who is an elected member of the South Dakota House of Representatives. Waiting for government to come to the rescue is a false hope, just ask the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. My encouragement to you is to take steps now to insulate yourself and your family from additional economic and social unrest....

The Survival Plan to Disaster-Proof Your Home

You already know the statistics of your plane crashing:  about 1 in a million! Nonetheless, once you stow your carry-on and take your seat, do you read the safety information card? Research into plane crashes has found that people who read the safety briefing cards are more likely to survive. These rituals that we consider an utter waste of time actually give our brains blueprints in the unlikely event that we need them.

Survival is not just a product of luck. We can do far more than we think to improve our odds of preventing and surviving even the most horrendous of catastrophes. It’s a matter of preparation — actually reading the in-flight safety card before takeoff — but also of mental conditioning.

Humans are programmed with basic survival skills. When frightened, we get a shot of performance-enhancing hormones, and the blood pumps to our limbs to help us outrun whatever enemy we face. But in modern times, we are hardly aware of such natural skills and most of us do little to understand or develop them.

Firefighters, police trainers — even stockbrokers — have told stories of seeing people freeze under extreme stress. I am one of those! Like deer in the headlights of a car, I have often chosen the wrong survival response in a crisis situation. Rather than choosing to fight in a crisis situation, I have been known to freeze in my tracks — especially when it comes to talking in front if a crowd!

Many flight attendants are now trained to scream at passengers in burning planes, “Get out! Get out! Go!” People respond well to leadership in a disaster, and then they can do remarkable things.

Are you ready to anticipate the strange behaviors that you will encounter at the worst of times?

But for many of us, preparation means little more than crossing our fingers and hoping to live. Regular people can learn from that knowledge, since, after all, we will be the first on the scene of any disaster.

During a crisis, you may not have the time or resources, nor will you be in the right frame of mind to consider everything you need to do.  Here lies the importance of making well-thought out survival plan and storing supplies before disaster hits and you are surrounded by chaos, fighting, freezing or fleeing.  Take precautions now, before it is too late. This includes mental adjustments, as well as physical.

Where to Begin

The first, easiest and most logical place to begin is...

Surviving Irene, Weathering Life

Hurricane Irene by NASA

With Hurricane Irene on the East, wildfires in Texas and floods in the Midwest, many American have experienced a fight for survival, substantial loss of property, injury and, in some very sad situations, loss of life.  Our prayers and best wishes go out to all.

Here in the Kardea Kitchen, we were spared real hardship, facing only power outages.  An inconvenience yes, but our 48 hours without electricity had benefits.  It became a thoughtful time, a time to reassess, appreciate life’s simple pleasures and, surprisingly, a time to de-stress.

Stress has been implicated as a major factor in the development of heart disease, heart attacks and strokes.  It is not only those intense stressful moments that may cause your blood pressure to spike.  Chronic stress — that day-in and day-out pressure — also takes its toll.

Medical researchers aren’t sure exactly how stress increases the risk of heart disease. It could be because chronic stress exposes your body to unhealthy, persistently high levels of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Studies also link stress to changes in the way blood clots, which increases the risk of heart attack. It could be that stress works indirectly, causing blood pressure to rise or contributing to an inflammatory environment in which cholesterol can do its damage.

In his own practice, Dr. Richard Collins, a Mayo Clinic trained cardiologist and co-author of The Kardea Gourmet has found stress reduction programs key tools for preventing heart attacks, particularly among those with known heart disease.  In his innovative wellness program, Dr. Collins advises yoga, massage and stress management programs for life.

De-stressing Strategies

So, back to our 48 hours without power! Many friends, neighbors and co-workers spent the days without power getting more stressed and as they wondered how they were going to survive.  They got angry and worked up over the utility companies pace of repair.  They worried about the foods that could be going bad in their freezers.   They felt frustrated that their daily routines were disturbed.

Now, my wife and I live in a 250 year old farm house. It did not have electricity or in-door plumbing until the 1930’s.   So, for 180 years, the families living in our home went without power.   As the notice came that Hurricane Irene was coming, we adopted the mindset that after the storm, we would be living like the generations that came before us in our colonial home — with only a few of the modern comforts of life.

We packed the freezer with ice and we lined up bottles of water.  We made sure that the propane tank was filled and the camping stove was ready.   We filled the bathtub and two garbage cans with water, and the cars with gas.  We made sure that we had matches, candles and cash.

Next, we picked the ripening vegetables — beans, cucumbers, tomatoes — and herbs from our garden.  We made sure we had lots of fruit and easier to prepare foods. Finally, my wife made sure that a pot of coffee was brewed and in the thermal carafe (I do get stressed without my morning cup).

Sanity and Survival

When the storm came, we watched its power with amazement.   We assumed that the light would go out. When they did, we did not stress.  We assumed that the power would be out for three or four day. We were pleased when power came on after two days.  We accepted that we would not be going to work until the roads were clear and safe.

As we sat in the dark during the power outage, we reflected that life is made of an endless series of disruptions to our daily patterns.   Like surviving Hurricane Irene, we realized that living life long, vital and happy is as much a mindset as it is about physical preparedness.    Cheers!

Is Your Family Prepared For Urban Survival?

You’re About To Learn Insider Secrets To Survive Disasters, Pandemics, Economic Collapse, and Breakdowns In Civil Order.

Once inside you’ll learn…

  • Survival is NOT a luxury reserved for the rich and how you can quickly and inexpensively put a survival plan into place to ride out disasters right where you currently live.
  • Why you probably won’t be able to get out of the city…besides heavy traffic, many small towns are preparing blockades to protect themselves from the “golden horde” of people fleeing cities.
  • How to prepare for disasters without making yourself a target for thieves now and looters later. Nothing screams “rob me!” like piles of survival supplies stacked in your garage.
  • How to create a plan that will work in the real world…even if you’re out of town and your family is home alone when the balloon goes up.
  • You don’t have time to learn everything. I’ll show you how to build a team of like minded people with complimentary skills without compromising operational security and making yourself a target.
  • Why most survival plans miss one of eight key factors. Missing a single one of these will likely mean the difference between success and failure. You don’t have too many chances to fail in a survival situation.

And that’s just a tiny sample!

The “Bear” Essentials

Bear Grylls by Flickr groupthing

If you’re the type of person who jumps out of planes into unknown wilderness simply to see if you can make it back to civilization, you’re either Bear Grylls, or you need to have your head examined. Okay, so you may never been stranded in Siberia’s -50°F terrain, but the Man Vs. Wild host delivers a small collections of resources to keep you alive!  This is not an exhaustive list or survival essentials, just experience from years of training, raw instincts and sheer will to survive.

1. Ziplock bags are a must!

Waterproof items such as cell phones and identification documents in Ziplock bags.

2. Remember Family

This kind of goes without saying, but stay in contact with family.

3. Laminate Memories

Survival is all about hope, keeping your spirits up, and smiling when it’s raining. So keep something that does that for you. Take a laminated picture of your loved ones, for instance, and stick it in the sole of your shoe. I have one of all three of my kids that I keep in my boot.”

4. Extra Socks

There is nothing like putting on a clean pair of socks at the end of a wet or tired day.  It can do wonders for uplifting your spirit, as well as protect your feet physically. Use your Ziploc bags and waterproof your extra socks!

5. Bag it

Trash bags are useful to have on hand for so many things: waterproofing, shelter, collect water and storage.  Plus, they hardly take up any space, so keep some on hand!

6. The Ultimate Knife

Includes a fire striker, a sharpener, a serrated blade, a normal blade and even a whistle.

This incredible survival utility is available through the Home Cures That Work Amazon store HERE.

7. The Bible

To Bear Grylls, the most important verse is:

“Be sure of this, that I am with you always, even unto the ends of the earth.”  Matthew 28:20

When you’re in any kind of survival situation, this verse is a good one to know!

8. Crank radio and flashlight

Stay in communication with others and don’t rely on batteries to navigate at night or in the dark.

9. Bag of Tricks

Pull the knowledge and techniques you’ve gain life to find food and water, build fire and shelter, and protect yourself in hostile environments. You never know what specific situation you’ll be up against, so take advantage of any opportunity that comes along. Do whatever it takes, eat whatever you need to, do the most disgusting uncouth things, if it means the difference between survival and failure.

10. Will to Survive

Remember, at the end of the day, Man Vs. Wild is a tv show.  Video reels can be edited, cropped for entertainment and fit between commercials. If you want to learn real survival skills, then train, prepare and practice!

Urban, natural or happen chance disaster may take you by surprise.  Keep your cool and plan ahead. Priorities are food, shelter, water and communication. With a little preparation, you can put the odds in your favor against whatever disaster nature brings.

Should you find yourself up a creek without a paddle, you’re going to need these 10 lifesavers courtesy of the “Man Vs. Wild” host.

If the odds were against you, what would you trust to keep you alive?

How to Keep Your Ship Afloat

It was April 15, 1912. Passengers on the Titanic were celebrating the vacation of their lives on the world’s biggest and most luxurious cruise ship on its maiden voyage. Management knew they were in dangerous waters. The ship was informed of the ice floes, yet they steamed full throttle with only enough lifeboats for half the passengers. Denial? Overconfidence? Sloppiness? Their lack of preventative measures cost 1517 lives.

Imagine being on the dance floor without a care in the world.

Suddenly, you hear a deafening crash and get thrown to the floor by a sudden powerful jolt. What goes through your mind? Probably panic, right? But, then what?

According to archived data, passengers generally reacted three ways.

  • Some stayed in a state of panic.
  • Others slipped into denial, continuing to drink and party.
  • A smaller percentage kept their cool, planned rational action, followed instructions from the crew and then initiated their actions.

Which group do you think had the highest survival rate? Exactly, it was those who planned and then initiated their plans.

Did you know many ran to their staterooms to rescue their money, jewelry and other belongings? Many of those whose first concern was their wealth took it to their watery graves.

When they first felt the impact, the passengers had no idea that within two and a half hours, the Titanic would rest on the ocean floor.

Like those passengers, we are on a sinking ship. Sure, we have more that two and a half hours. You have how many? Ten, twenty, thirty or more years? But, guess what? We do not have a lifeboat to fight over. The good news is, we are building one for you now.

Do not go down on aging’s Titanic. Choose to survive.

Like the Titanic‘s management, who in denial of the looming dangers, chose to go full speed ahead, society, including governments and corporations, have their heads in the sand when it comes to aging. They party on, ignoring the reality of our pending demise. They do not consider building a lifeboat to cure aging.

Instead, they tend to the sinking ship‘s maintenance, patching leaks here and there, bailing out water when it does get in, and they continue treating symptoms. Most industries follow their lead.

Then, when something goes wrong, people panic. They pull all stops to cure what should have been prevented. They never considered fixing aging in the first place.

Preventative medicine and lifestyle changes seemed like too much of a bother. After all, they had a mortgage to take care of twenty years ago and yearly vacations to plan and save for. They live hand to mouth and, like lemmings, they follow big government’s and big pharma’s direction to their premature deaths.

Others cling to their wealth instead of investing a portion in their health and longevity and in the technologies that might prolong their lives. They die rich when they could have survived longer and gotten even richer.

Then there are a growing minority who invest in their personal health and who invest in the type of technologies described in Part I of Life Extension Express. Maximum Life Foundation is spearheading that movement.

Ironically, early investors in these technologies may not only be the first beneficiaries of their life-extending properties, they may even be able to multiply their wealth from the potential returns from their investments.

How would you like to own a piece of the company or companies that develop age-reversing treatments or products? What would a cure for aging be worth?

We have some work to do first. For example, there is an ongoing lifeboat collision between close-minded cultural traditions and the moving boundary of what is possible in medical science. Traditions threatened by any major change, like what can be done and should be done about aging, are powerful things.

“Curing” aging, like so many advances that medicine has seen at one time or another, breaks those traditions. We see a certain level of hostility when traditions are challenged. This is true of longevity science in general.

Ship Captain by Flickr lowjumpingfrog

Over the years ahead, the research community will, with sufficient directed funding, slow and reverse the course of aging, and ultimately eliminate aging entirely, including the frailty and age-related diseases it brings. However, a substantial proportion of the population does not yet see this as a desirable goal. That is a problem, our problem, and another challenge of longevity and surviving we have to surmount.

So, who is the captain of your ship? If not you, you choose to give control to someone else like many on the Titanic. Whether it’s government, big business or antiquated traditional ideas, that “someone else” does not have your best interests at heart.

Are you going to panic and let someone else steer you into an iceberg, or are you going to take control of your own destiny?

It’s sink or stay afloat. What life-loving person would choose to go down with the ship? That decision is made years before the ship sinks. Insurance is not for sale when you need it.

How do you keep your head above water when life starts to pull you under or overwhelms you?

Greens and Whole Food Powder

When we are under stress, our bodies use up our nutrient stores faster, and therefore we may need even more than usual. An adequate supply of these important nutrients will allow you to endure stress more easily, increasing your resistance to mental and physical disease.

We all understand that one of the keys to sound nutrition is a highly varied diet. But during times of emergency and survival we will no doubt be restricted in the variety of foods that we have available to us. In fact, we might be eating a lot of the same foods over and over. These factors, along with the fact that our bodies need more vitamins and minerals when under stress, mean that it will be even more important to take supplements during times of emergency than during normal times. Receive the nutritional benefits of multiple servings of fruits and vegetables through greens and whole food powder supplementation.

For optimal health, keep a one-year supply of greens or whole food powder in your emergency food stash. It might even be a good idea to start to use the powder on a daily basis to obtain the USDA 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables.  You won’t have a problem keeping the stock fresh if you start now. Just remember that when you empty a bottle/container and purchase a new one that it has to go to the back of the shelf and every other bottle has to be moved forward. Take the product off the shelf and be careful to grab the oldest one, which will be the one in the front. That way all of green and whole food powders remain as fresh as possible.

Powders have a shelf-life of around 2-years.  After the recommended two-year shelf-life has been exceeded, the powder is still viable, but will have lost some of their potency. The older they are the more potency they will lose. You do not have to discard your powder after the expiration date and can continue consuming the greens and whole food powder. They may not be as potent as when you purchased them but they will be better than nothing, especially in time of emergency and survival!

Home Cures That Work has reviewed green and whole food powder products to be considered (safe or not safe) supplements essential to any emergency food stash.

Two products that were tested exceeded limits for lead and/or cadmium.  They are:...

A Survival Guide For The Culture Of Overeating

Certain foods are powerful.

They cast a spell over the most well-meaning dieter and cause logical people to overeat unhealthy foods until their sides hurt.

They occupy your thoughts to the point of obsession as you try to ignore a plate of cookies.

When it’s all said and done, they accumulate on your body in the most obtrusive way as a result of dozens of unused calories.

Why does food hold such power? Most importantly, how can you control your eating and survive?

The End of Overeating

David A. Kessler, MD set out to answer these pressing questions in his instant bestseller, The End of Overeating. Despite being a pediatrician, a former FDA commissioner, and former dean of the medical schools at Yale and the University of California, San Francisco, Dr. Kessler struggles with his weight.

Observing the current obesity epidemic, he knew that he wasn’t alone.

Dr. Kessler, with the insight of some of the brightest minds in medicine and science, discovered the following three reasons that most of us are compelled to overeat.

  1. An Irresistible Combination Rewires Your Brain
Think of your favorite treat. Most likely it can be broken down into the basic building blocks of sugar, fat and salt. This combination is known of as the “three points of the compass,” a combination that has been shown to literally alter the biological circuitry of your brain.
Sugar, fat and salt give food a high hedonic value which gives you pleasure. This pleasure reinforces you to return to your favorite foods time and time again.
  2. The Food Industry Targets You
Everywhere you go you’ll see the clever work of the food industry, tempting you with highly palatable creations. Food has become a science and your taste preferences the guiding light.

The food industry has one goal: to get you hooked. By constructing unhealthy food items that are high in sugar, fat and salt they know that you will come back time and time again.
  3. Conditioned Hyper-eating Becomes a Way of Life
Humans are conditioned to seek more reward. When readily available, hyper palatable food become our reward a pattern of hyper-eating quickly emerges. Dr. Kessler describes the cycle:

”Foods high in sugar, fat, and salt, and the cues that signal them, promote more of everything: more arousal…more thoughts of food…more urge to pursue food…more dopamine-stimulated approach behavior…more consumption…more opioid-driven reward…more overeating to feel better…more delay in feeling full…more loss of control…more preoccupation with food…more habit-driven behavior…and ultimately, more and more weight gain.”

Breaking the Cycle

The good news is that you don’t have to remain trapped in a cycle of overeating. The following three survival tips will put you back in control.

Set Your Rules

In order to resist overeating in today’s tempting food environment, you must eat by a set of self-imposed rules. Predetermined rules take away the need to make food decisions in vulnerable moments.

Dr. Kessler thinks these rules should be, “Simple enough to fit with your busy life, but specific enough to remove uncertainty from the food equation.”

For suggestions as to what rules you should adopt, let’s turn to another authority on eating, bestselling author of In Defense of Food, Michael Pollan:

  • Don’t eat anything your great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.
  • Pay more, eat less. Look for quality of food over quantity.
  • Eat meals. Cut out snacking, stick with structured meals.
  • Don’t get your fuel from the same place your car does. Gas stations are great for fueling your car, but the foods they sell are not suited to fuel you.
  • Try not to eat alone. Eating can become mindless when alone, leading to overeating.
  • Eat slowly. Eat foods that have been prepared slowly – that mean no fast food.

Make Negative Associations

When was the last time you peeled a lemon and ate it whole? Probably never. That’s because your taste buds have a negative association with the sour taste.

Our taste buds have traditionally been our guide when it comes to food selection, but this must change for you to successfully avoid overeating. Since the food industry purposely crafts food items to please your taste buds (not waistline) what tastes good can no longer dictate what you eat.

It’s up to you to create negative associations with unhealthy food to survive — despite their pleasing taste. Here are some negatives to focus on:

  • Those extra calories will accumulate around your waist.
  • Your health will suffer.
  • You will become more disappointed with your appearance.
  • You’ll feel sluggish.

Give Yourself a Real Reward

The bottom line is that we eat unhealthy food as a reward, even though it causes more harm that good. It’s time to give yourself a truly beneficial reward – exercise.

Exercise is a healthy reward that will not only release endorphins into your system, but will also give you the benefit of weight loss and improved health.

I truly believe that you can overcome your pattern of overeating with healthy eating and regular exercise. I also believe that although the physical aspect of losing weight is important, one could not sustain and survive a healthy and fit lifestyle without a holistic and healthy balance of the three expressions of life, mind, body and spirit.

What tips would you like to share about how to avoid overeating?
