PSA Celebrity Trouble

The Prostate Screening Celebrity Controversy

If we think about Bill Cosby, we will quickly match his comical personality to the fun product Jell-O.

That is also the case for Wilfred Brimley’s grandfatherly tone for healthy Quaker Oats.

Or,  for Dennis Haysbert’s imposing frame and booming voice for the “Good Hands People” at Allstate.

Some products show they solve a problem, like for celebrities endorsing Jenny Craig’s weight loss system.

Researchers from the prestigious Dartmouth Medical College have produced one of the first rigorous investigations of how celebrities affect enthusiasm to seek screening services, especially for PSA (prostate specific antigen) testing for prostate cancer.

According to their studies, about half of the adult population have seen celebrity endorsements for  prostate screening.  This would include former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani‘s statement about PSA testing for prostate cancer, “Of course, we probably wouldn’t be talking about this if I hadn’t gotten screened…” and his following plea, “If you’re over 50 or in a high risk group, please get screened—now.”

But efforts of celebrities for prostate screening only perform rhetoric, which is only  a form of emotional persuasion.  ”Selling” prostate screening by a celebrity  is designed to “bypass the science” and create an atmosphere where politicians and celebrities could accuse the scientists of “dragging their feet” by insisting on rigorous, but slow, assessments of potentially valuable new technologies.

But, as the science of screening unfolds, we learn more every week that the costs, harms, and benefits of screening programs are complex and uncertain. As the Dartmouth researchers make clear, there are many people who will benefit from these tests, but there are others for whom the early detection of cancer will bring unnecessary testing and treatment: “Screening is increasingly recognised as a two-edged sword.”

The problem is that celebrities don’t tend to make statements based on evidence. Just because Mayor Giuliani believes his life was saved by PSA prostate screening is of no evidentiary value.

Because many cases of prostate cancer do not become clinically evident, medical experts disagree about whether prostate cancer screening is right for all men. It is not clear if the benefits of screening outweigh the risks.

“A few people will experience benefits, such as early diagnosis, but many will experience some harm—anxiety, further testing, and costs, or even unnecessary surgery as a result of being screened.” He also has a strong message for the authorities: “While governments or other bodies may promote the benefits of screening, not enough attempts are being made to present an accurate picture of what the downsides are.” ~ Professor Bruce Armstrong, Sydney University

Dartmouth researchers have concluded with a powerful call for reform: “We see no obvious role for celebrity endorsement of prostate cancer screening.”

Which celebrity has impacted you most by his or her endorsement?  Has one celebrity in particular influenced how you think or act about your prostate?

Stop Smoking: Follow President Obama’s Example

For many people, quitting smoking is a real test of wills.  Ozzy Osbourne, the Black Sabbath singer and of the rock world’s most famous drug abusers, said of all the drugs he quit, that smoking was the hardest.

For President Barack Obama, quitting was a personal challenge. Kicking the habit wasn’t easy, “The fact is, quitting smoking is hard. Believe me, I know.” The commander in chief has managed to wean himself off the coffin nails, quitting his 30-year cigarette habit.  After numerous failed attempts, he wanted to be able to look into his daughters, Malia, 12, and Sasha, 9, in the eye and say he did not smoke.

In fact, just recently (November 2011), President Obama encouraged smokers to quit smoking or make a plan to quit as participants in the “Great American Smokeout.”

First Lady Michelle Obama said she does not ask him a lot about how he stopped smoking, but is happy for her kids that he did. Obama discussed his smoking–and his use of Nicorette–in 2008.

“I’ve been chewing on this Nicorette, which tastes like you’re chewing on ground pepper – but it does help.”

How did Obama quit smoking without getting fat? Obama’s doctors say he is, “Tobacco free, physically active, eats a healthy diet, stays at a healthy weight, (and) on occasion drinks alcohol in moderation.”  It helps having your own private chef, nutritionist, trainer and the best medical care on the planet.  Or, maybe it is the basketball workout. :)

In the president’s challenge to quit in the “Great America Smokeout,” he links to resources that can help smokers quit and highlights government efforts to prevent young people from lighting up. If have tried to quit many times and will likely try again, but not on a government-mandated day, we respect anyone who is able to quit today.

You can follow the President Obama’s example.

  1. Set a target quit smoking date: make it a week or two in advance and think about what the challenging situations are to prepare for.
  2. Get rid of all cigarettes: get them out of the house to remove the temptation.
  3. Tell your friends and family: you want to be sure they know so they can support you in your effort.
  4. Engage in evidence-based cessation treatments:
    • Brief clinical interventions (i.e., when a doctor takes 10 minutes or less to deliver advice and assistance about quitting)
    • Counseling (e.g., individual, group, or telephone counseling)
    • Behavioral cessation therapies (e.g., training in problem solving)
    • Treatments with more person-to-person contact and intensity (e.g., more time with counselors)

President John F. Kennedy vs. Addison

JFK with Addison's Disease by Flickr Ken's Aviation

The medical term for adrenal insufficiency is Addison’s Disease, which refers to the inadequate production of hormones from the adrenal glands due to an underlying disease.

President John F. Kennedy had Addison’s Disease, but the Annals of Internal Medicine have determined the underlying cause of JFK’s adrenal gland insufficiency as probably a rare autoimmune disease.

At first, abdominal pain was diagnosed in his youth as colitis, then back surgery caused chronic pain. Eventually, after many prescribed pain medications, sleeping pills, steroid and hormone injections, JFK was properly diagnosed with Addison’s Disease.

Addison’s disease is characterized by the withering of the adrenal glands, which make corticosteroids and other hormones that are used for salt metabolism, response to stress and response to inflammation. Symptoms include fatigue, dizziness, muscle weakness, weight loss, difficulty standing up, nausea, sweating and changes in mood and personality.

Kennedy had to receive daily steroid injections to survive, to stimulate muscle growth and stimulate his appetite.  The steroids themselves have side effects, including susceptibility to infection: urinary, skin and respiratory infections came as a result.  Overall, JFK took a host of drugs during his presidency.

Kennedy worried about the effects on his appearance of the steroids he took as treatment for Addison Disease. The steroids made his face look puffy and made him look overweight.

Four days before his inauguration, Kennedy caught sight of himself in a mirror and declared, “My God, look at that fat face, if I don’t lose five pounds this week we might have to call off the Inauguration.”

Though during the JFK campaign in 1960, Kennedy denied he had Addison’s Disease. Classic Addison’s Disease has been caused by tuberculosis. Since John F. Kennedy never suffered from tuberculosis of any kind, he and his spokespersons maintained that he did not have Addison’s Disease, in the classic sense.

There was substantial secrecy surrounding his health during his years as president. Later, John F. Kennedy maintained that his adrenal insufficiency was a side effect of the malaria he contracted after the war. But after his death, those that examined his medical records have concluded that he had a secondary form of the disease, which was slow deterioration of the adrenal glands from the autoimmune disease hypothyroidism, rather than a rapid destruction.  Adrenal insufficiency, no matter how caused, is a serious matter.

Rather than adversely affecting him politically, John F. Kennedy’s physical ailments vitally contributed to the development of his character and to the formation of his political personality. He proved his worth and demonstrated his strength by rising above all others, even with Addison’s Disease.

Stallone Hopes Hindu Herbs Will Ease Chronic Knee Pain

Sylvester Stallone by Flickr ashokha

Few figures are as iconic and meaningful to American than Sylvester Stallone. He, and others such as Schwarzenegger and Willis, set the standard for manliness through their epic films featuring death and destruction, delivering witty quips for us all. Of those three, the only one who’s managed to stay in natural rocking shape is Sylvester Stallone.

At the age of 62, Stallone’s go-to workout has remained basically unchanged since his first days of Rambo. As a result, he may have bounded up the stairs during everyone’s favorite Rocky scene, but these days persistent knee pain has Sylvester Stallone moving at a slower pace.

To relieve his achy joints, the action man has embraced ayurveda, the ancient system of medicine of India, after befriending alternative medicine experts as he prepared for Bollywood movie Unfortunate Love in Los Angeles.

He has not been Sly about his enthusiasm for the effectiveness of this Eastern practice. The herbal-based ayurveda regulates the imbalance of three bodily energies – pitta (bile), kapha (phlegm) and vata (wind). This balance can be recreated by changing person’s diet, thoughts and habits.

“Sly is the most disciplined man that you’ll ever meet in any walk of life,” says his personal bodyguard Gary Compton. “He doesn’t eat real late, he doesn’t snack, and he doesn’t eat much. Pasta? Yes, but not too often, and only when it’s made with a special flour. Fish and brown rice are staples. He even eats fish for breakfast. He drinks little alcohol, but occasionally enjoys champagne. Quick energy? Would you believe oatmeal cookies? Of course, without processed sugar of preservatives.”

The ayurvedic form of treatment in recent past is fast gaining popularity in helping people suffering from chronic pain, celebrity or not. It improves the blood circulation in joints, removing unwanted toxins and other waste products. These are safe herbal medicines to cure joint pains and other musculo-skeletal problems naturally. You can try the following:

Turmeric by Flickr Carlos Lorenzo

  • Turmeric, a member of ginger family, has great medicinal properties and heals inflammation and mild joint pain. Ayurvedic experts are of the opinion that turmeric reduces joint pain to a great extent.
  • Feverfew capsules, taken once or twice a day, help due to its anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Ginger being an anti-inflammatory herb is considered as effective in chronic pain relief.
  • Six drops each of chamomile essential oil can be added to four ounces of carrier oil such as soybean, sesame, avocado or almond. These can be added to warm bath and the painful area can be soaked for a few minutes.
  • Shallaki is the herbal anti-inflammatory and natural pain-killer that restores movement and reconstructs the shape of the joint by recreating cartilage and fluid.

There you have it. If a 62-year old man such as Sylvester Stallone can cure chronic pain with ayurveda, then so can you!

Beyonce and the Master Cleanse

What Is Your Body Telling You?

Hollywood stars use detox programs to prepare themselves for the red carpet. In anticipation for tight dresses, cameras that add on the pounds and fashion icons, who wouldn’t want to reduce bloating and fatigue?   After all, celebrity or not, everyone is exposed to a variety of toxins, from air pollution to alcohol.

Some of us experience the effects of toxic poisoning sooner than others; but it is abundantly clear that toxins in the food, air, water and the environment trigger most illness and disease in people. Detox practices claim to remove these toxins, promise health benefits and weight loss, which make them so popular among the rich and famous.

While there might be risk of diarrhea, deprivation and laxatives, detox programs have a star-power following, particularly for the detox program called the Master Cleanse.

Caution: this detox is not for the weak!

A Grade

The Master Cleanse has practically become a household name.  Singer Beyonce was one of the first popular stars to admit she used the “Maple Syrup Diet.”  Also known as the “Lemonade Diet,” the Master Cleanse consists of water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper.

The lemon juice must be fresh and is used for its alkalizing properties, as well benefit from its natural cleansing ability to break down calcification.  The maple syrup in the Master Cleanse serves to provide energy with its first-grade (Grade A) natural source of “tree blood.”  Furthermore, flavor has to be satisfied somehow!  Lastly, cayenne pepper serves to boost metabolism, assist circulation, blood thinner and purifier, as well as break up mucous in the body.  It is the most crucial element and ingredient in the Master Cleanse.

Beyonce lost around 20 pound in 10 days, sipping on an easy to prepare diet drink made mostly of maple syrup. Devotees of the diet eat no solid food but drink up to 10 daily glasses of the lemon juice cocktail and round it off with saltwater in the morning and laxative tea at night. They are supposed to stay on the cleanse for at least 10 days, then ease back into normal eating with orange juice and vegetable soup. When all the toxins are removed, the added benefits include renewed energy and quick weight loss.

The main drawback: you never want to be too far from a toilet. The cleanse produces very liquid and plentiful bowel movements. As for other side effects: hunger!

Popularity Cleanse

According to one website that promotes the cleanse, the purpose is “to dissolve and eliminate toxins and congestion; to cleanse the kidneys and digestive system; to purify glands; to eliminate waste and hardened materials in the joints and muscles; to build a healthy bloodstream; to maintain optimal blood pressure; and to what you all are waiting to hear … to lose weight.”

It’s no secret that practically all celebrities watch their weight. They are in the type of business that requires them to look a certain way and they are constantly watched by the entire world. Many of them diet or detox throughout their acting careers. It’s no secret that anything popular in Hollywood, becomes extremely mainstream throughout the world, including the Master Cleanse detox program.

Vincent Van Gogh: Tortured Talent and Suspected Sufferer

Old Man in Sorrow by Van Gogh

Scientists have for speculated that genius may be linked with madness. The link was strongest among those who studied music or literature, the two disciplines in which genius and madness are most often linked in history.

Vincent Van Gogh, a Dutch post-Impressionist painter known for his vivid-colored and rendered artworks, was a brilliant artist in the late 1800s with as many as 873 paintings and 1049 drawings credited to his brief career, celebrated for his unique content and use of color. Sometimes bright, sometimes blue is the world of legendary artist Vincent Van Gogh. His feverish production of art is said to have come with sustained enthusiasm and manic episodes, followed by exhaustion and depression.

Throughout his life, Van Gogh had had an eccentric personality and unstable moods, suffering from psychotic episodes during the last 2 years of his extraordinary life. Many physicians have ventured a perplexing variety of diagnoses of his illness and various biographies describe him as suffering with epilepsy, depression, psychotic attacks, delusions and bipolar disorder.

Due to Van Gogh‘s extreme enthusiasm and dedication to first religion and then art coupled with the feverish pace of his art production many believe that mania was a prominent condition in Van Gogh’s life.

One hundred and eighty-nine paintings he executed in one incredibly manic twelve-month run: haystacks, harvests, cafes, portraits, self-portraits – all these works he poured his soul – and ultimately his sanity – into, which only stood in mockery to his extraordinary gift, without a single buyer to be had.

Think: If you were possessed of the talent of Vincent Van Gogh and no one on this planet recognized it, wouldn’t you, too, go mad?

In December 1888, he experienced a psychotic episode in which he threatened the life of Gauguin, his fellow artist and a personal friend, and cut off a piece of his own left ear before offering it as a gift to a prostitute.

However, these episodes were always followed by exhaustion and depression and ultimately suicide. Therefore, a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or manic depression makes sense with the accounts of these episodes in Van Gogh‘s life.

The self-portrait of Vincent Van Gogh is haunting – the sharp nose and sunken cheeks, the desperate eyes peering from hollowed sockets. Face and beard are slashed by violent almost bloody diagonal strokes that clash with the blues elsewhere on the canvas. We have seen the image a thousand times and we know it as the portrait of genius and madness.

It was mania that throttled his creative engine and depression that extinguished it. Some have speculated that genius is fired by madness. Sure, it is most likely that the manic episode phase of his illness provided the power surge he needed to complete an incredible 400 or so paintings in the last three years of his life. But that same madness also brought his work to a complete stop, first temporarily, then permanently, eventually committing suicide at the age of 37.

Thankfully, you don’t have to be bipolar to be a genius – but it might help.

The stereotype of the tortured artist shows up often in popular culture, not just in history. Along with that stereotype comes an assumption, that the hyper highs and crushing lows that we witness in some of our celebrities is a sign of bipolar disorder. Please open up below about your struggles with bipolar disorder and reveal how you cope, artistically or not, with the inevitable highs and lows of this challenging condition.

Cybill Shepherd: Singing The Menopause Blues

“The Menopause Blues” is a catchy and hilarious song written and sung by Cybill Shepherd.  Cybill was one of the first to bring personal lamentations about menopause to the airwaves in her television sitcom “Cybill” during the mid 1990s.

To take women’s issues one step further, Cybill used music to come out loud and proud about menopause.

After Cybill began speaking publicly about menopause, floods of normal and herbal formulas packaged from all over the world became available to remedy symptoms of menopause.  Like for so many other women, doctor subscribed estrogen was not the only prescription for navigating menopause.  Cybill Shepherd started substituting with natural approach to help remedy hot flashes. The standardized red cover extract, a phytoestrogen-rich plant extract, helped her manage the mood swings, decreased libido and memory loss. Phytoestrogen content may
even help support healthy bone density and circulation.

There are a lot of natural different approaches to forage your individual pathway through menopause.  Black cohosh, natural progesterone, calcium, vitamin E and D, and more from nature’s pharmacy can offer safer choices than your doctor ever could. Most self-care menopause treatments provide the best results due to education, knowledge and trial and error.

In the end, Cybill’s sense of humor and laughter – even in song – has gotten her through the tough times hormonal times. Today, with so many natural options available, the fifties, sixes and beyond can open up whole new passages leading to stages of life.

“It is not easy, but it is also
another exciting stage. It can be explored. You can learn from it.”~ Cybill Shepherd

Joan Rivers – Facing Osteoporosis with Humor

Joan Rivers is quoted joking about osteoporosis, “My bones click so much that dolphins try to pick up on me.” However, osteoporosis is no laughing matter! But, leave it to celebrity Joan Rivers to make light — and make progress — with the disease.

At the light age of 64, Joan went in for a complete work up and results of a bone density test revealed she could fall down the stairs, not because she would trip but, because her bones might break.  Osteoporosis hadn’t shown any signs or symptoms, yet it was stalking Joan’s life waiting for an opportunity to make a wisecrack of its own: snap, crackle, pop!

The Queen of comedy has some surprising one-liners in response to the nosebleed section of osteoporosis that has tried to “boo” her off stage:

  • Walk everywhere
  • Choose the stairs over the elevator
  • Exercise 3x/week with weights
  • Take nutritional supplements

This regime has served to not only strengthen Joan River’s bones, but strengthen her stage presence.  Joan became an Ambassador for the National Osteoporosis Foundation and champions reversing the symptoms of osteoporosis.

Known for her love of jewelry, and wearing a myriad of beads and bangle bracelets on her arms, Joan says osteoporosis prevention can help women “avoid having a walker become of one of their ‘must-have’ accessories.” She suggests, “A few extra laps while shopping and have a latte decaf rather than plain coffee” to ensure women get their daily dose of exercise, calcium and vitamin D.

Diet is an important part of osteoporosis prevention. Calcium-rich foods supplemented with vitamin D include yogurt, cheese, milk, sardines with bones and green, leafy vegetables.

Joan Rivers humorously points out that while people look beautiful on the outside they should be paying more attention to keeping their bones strong. After all, beauty is bone deep!

Let the last laugh be on osteoporosis!

Bed Bugs Love Celebrities, Too!

Flickr by casspixx

Not only are beds, luggage and clothes susceptible to bed bugs, now there is evidence of cars being infested. From the ditches if World War II to the heights of Manhattan penthouses, bed bugs have found a home in the limousine of celebrity Howard Stern. Beg bug sniffing dogs were utilized to sweep Stern’s limousine, which were also found in his office.

Howard Stern stated that “Supposedly we’re 100 percent bed bug-free. The only place in New York City that probably is 100 percent bed bug-free … [But] I’m scratching every minute.”

No one is immune from bed bugs, not even the famous. Bed bugs are indifferent, bastardly and prey on the poor and the wealthy. Stephanie Seymour, Renee Zellweger and a host of other celebrities have also come in contact with the little bed bug suckers – or biters, for that matter!

Celebrities, in particular are susceptible to bed bugs, after traveling a lot and staying in various hotels, and they might just pick up bed bugs somewhere and bring them home. It’s not just the hotels that put celebrities at risk. Their tendency to buy multiple properties and perpetual-motion lifestyles also increase bed-bug risk.

The only advantage a celebrity might have in conquering bed bugs is that instead of cleaning everything, they just replace everything!
